Ahhhh your Logan backstory analysis was so perfect, never even considered the Noah factor of love= staying and enduring abuse! Haha, yeah I had read and loved your Rose/Kendall take. It was a connection I thought of when watching safe room, great to see someone do a full thing on it. Thinking about Rose and Noah, I think its likely that Logans past relationships were defined by powerlessness. Aside from Noah's abuse, there would have been a great deal of powerlessness with Rose (1-3)
if she was mentally ill (Rose Williams and Rose-mary Kennedy seem likely inspo). Having a mentally ill family member can be painful, helplessly watching worsening symptoms and praying it doesnāt end in your worst nightmare, which for Logan it seemed like it did. At the same time, there is also the anger/ resentment that you cant express because they cant help it. Would it make sense for Logan to transfer his feelings of powerlessness and anger from his formative relationships onto his current?
Finally he isnāt the one begging to be let in, the one who can be left, the one who can be hurt with no consequence. If Kendall is reminiscent of Rose, could Loganās need to ākeep him closeā whilst tormenting him partially be a way for Logan to express his unresolved feelings regarding his relationship with his sister?
(x)
Gosh, anon, I'm so fascinated by you bringing up Rosemary Kennedy and Rose Williams, because you're right, they do feel like significant references, especially with the Kennedy's being mentioned directly in comparison to the family in both 3.06 with Connor's presidential campaign, and 3.08 with the podcast. Rosemary had crossed my mind before, but I hadn't even thought of Rose Williams, and I think you're right. The show is so thoughtful with how it utilises names, places and plots, and those two women both having the same name and being the sisters' in dynastic families feels like a really clear reference. Given both Rosemary Kennedy and Rose Williams were lobotomised for mental illness too - - just, oof. If we're supposed to understand that was the way Rose Roy's story ended too, it feels like an even greater layer of tragedy for her character than suicide. It's a type of killing impossible to comprehend.
In answering your question ā yeah, I think Logan's the exact sort of person to project the powerlessness of his past onto the present. His entire career I think has arguably been about that ā he's a survivor through and through (and it's actually one of the things I loved about him and Marcia originally, because I think the show made it pretty clear that that survivalism and endurance was what connected them), and everything about the way he's raised his children feels like a response to the way he was (and wasn't) raised. God, even him getting full custody from Caroline of the golden trio feels like a direct response to his mother sending him, Ewan and Rose away as children and never seeing them again.
If we are to understand that Rose was mentally ill in a similar way to Kendall, which I do think we are (and I suspect given Kendall's arc this season, the show seems to be finally putting big markers in that he's bipolar), I think it completely makes sense that Logan would project Rose onto Kendall. It contextualises a lot of Logan's specific dynamic with him too (and actually I think with Shiv as well, as his daughter), particularly in the sense that Logan's most conflicting, protective, tender and emotionally punishing moments are with Kendall.
Logan wants all his kids in the business, but it's Kendall he wants to share the glass wall with ā kept right where he can see him, and it's him Logan worries about when a gunshot goes off in the building, and him who he sends Greg to keep an eye on and him who he doesn't let drive anymore, and yet it's also him who Logan frequently punishes the most. He can't handle any of the kids dissenting, but Kendall's the only one he's fired, the only one he's called nothing and nobody, the only one he's tried to disinherit.
Of course, Kendall's the only one of the four of them who's acted against Logan as significantly as he has, but I do think it's interesting that Logan actually hasn't punished Roman and Shiv in remotely similar ways. Particularly Roman, who was involved in the attempted coup, and hugely botched the Pierce deal by texting Naomi. Logan called him a moron but otherwise seemed to let it go, and there's probably something in there about his lack of consideration for Roman broadly and Logan knowing Roman'll come to heel, but I think as a point of comparison, there's something to be said about Logan being especially reactive when it comes to Kendall.
Like you said, having a family member with mental illness, especially unmanaged and undiagnosed mental illness, can be extremely painful, and even putting speculation about Rose aside, it's textual canon that Logan has managed it with both his first wife and with Kendall. If we do add Rose to that mix, which again, I do feel like we're supposed to, I think there's a lot to be said about this storm of unmanaged trauma and survivor's guilt that likely lives in Logan, and it plays out, I think, in a degree of powerlessness with Kendall. Logan knows already that there's nothing he can do about the drugs, he knew there wasn't anything he could do about the shoplifting, so in both instances, he cleaned it up, and his conversation with Kendall in 3.08 implies he's cleaned up a lot more than just that.
A part of that's just in Kendall being a rich kid with a dad who can, of course, but I don't know. I don't think anything in the world makes Logan feel like he's in free fall in the way Kendall does, and I think a big part of that is because Logan's seen how this story ends.
#i'm going to be thinking about this ask all day anon#god#i'm in pain#just the idea of logan watching his children and expecting to see rose in shiv as his daughter#and instead seeing the parts of rose he'd hoped they'd buried with her in his son#if it WAS a lobotomy too ewan saying it wasn't logan's fault makes me think noah and his wife arranged it#but maybe logan said something that made them do it#i'm curious when it happened#and if it happened before or after logan married connor's mum#i'm inclined to think before just because i do think it feels responsive#idk idk#i'm so fascinated#release the podcast hbo!!#let it feed us during the hiatus haha#(it legit would be great tie-in content)#hbo succession#logan roy#rose roy#logan + rose#kendall + logan#succession meta#welcome to my ama

fic idea: lester and jonesy scramble to get ingredients and find the recipe for the cake momma always used to bake the twins on their birthday. they are inept.
THIS IS SO CUTE AAA !!
warnings: slight mentions of abuse ---------------------------------------
Lester knew how his older siblings didn't really care for birthdays --at least not Bo-- it was kind of a sensitive topic as most familial holidays were for the Sinclair siblings, seeing as they lacked the proper warmth that their parents should have offered. The only semblance of affection was bestowed onto Vincent, being as he was their mother's favorite, and in turn, their father's as well. When holidays came their parents did attempt to share the sentiment with their two other kids, but it was stark in comparison to what Vincent received; it was like they were dogs receiving scraps while the real family sat at the table and enjoyed their meal. Thinking about it made Lester upset and he didn't like to dwell on it too much, he was determined to pick up the slack from his parents and reinstate the feel good emotions that holidays should have brought.
Now how was the question, and a damn good one at that. It wasn't that Lester wasn't good at planning things, he was quite good, in fact former partners always boasted about how thoughtful he was when it came to things like this. But this time was different. Sure he loved the ones that used to be in his life, but these were his brothers who he knew might not react positively to it, he didn't want to dig up any bad memories. And yeah, people liked parties and having things given to them, but when you grow up expecting that same loving hand to strike you, it's hard to cherish the good when you know terrible is right around the corner. It hurt Lester that his brother's couldn't appreciate even the smallest things, and it made him hate his parents for making it that way, but he would never mention it to the other two.
That's when he remembered his mom's old recipe book, she was a horrible mother but a damn good baker, and if he was right he'd be able to find that one caramel cake recipe she always made for his siblings on their birthday. He'd set out to get the ingredients, they were on a budget but Lester had set aside some money to get the good stuff, anything for his brothers. All he needed was some company.
Jonesy.
Pup at his feet and directions in hand, Lester sought to set everything out, he had borrowed some cook ware from the house but he'd bring it back when he was done, maybe not clean but returned. He was confident as he measured out the ingredients but with each step he followed his faith wavered. "Y'know girl, this'sa LOT harder than I had reckoned." Lester looked down as Jonesy who just stared up at him with her head tilted.
Determined, Lester continued on whisking and adding and folding till his arms were sore, his mama made it look so easy. He was so caught up in his stumbling over the batter he completely forgot about the beast that would be the icing, and just like with the batter he shook off any concerns, how hard could it be?
He set the ingredients in the pan to melt and went back to pouring the batter in the cake pan before setting it in the heated oven. Directing his attention back to the icing, he noticed it had melted all together and he checked the instructions for what to do next. "Okay girly, it says-- TWO HOURS?" His eyes bulged as he stared down at the paper, he hadn't remembered it taking that long and he didn't have the time to wait.
"Okay y'know what we're g'na do? Not that," Lester set the paper down and turned the eye up to a higher degree, "if it's hotter it'll cook faster, now ain't I smart?" He chuckled as Jonesy barked a response. "You said it sister."
Lester watched as the contents of the pot bubble as it turned a caramel color, stirring it occasionally. He decided to put on some records to help pass the time as he waited for the cake to bake. "S'too quiet," He muttered and cranked the knob to his old boombox as the voice of Merle Haggard flowed from the speakers and into the small kitchen, "there, thas better." He looked at Jonesy before patting his chest, and invitation for her to jump up and dance with him. He held the dog's paws as he swayed and sang along.
"ā« A workin' man can't get nowhere today ā«"
He grinned and stepped with the dog, "Ain't that right Jonesy girl!" Jonesy barked and Lester howled, encouraging her to make more noise. He was having such a good time with his dance partner that he forgot about the now burning icing on the stove. "Shoot!" Lester hissed and raced to stir the liquid and take it off the eye. It was a dark brown and Lester only hoped that it wasn't too bad cause he had used everything he bought and he didn't have enough to remake it. He could only hope that he didn't also mess up the cake.
Equipped with a butter knife, Lester opened the oven and stuck it in the middle of the cake before pulling it out, something he'd seen his mom do, except he didn't know what to look for. He noticed how the top was cooked and it was squishy when he pressed into it, so he pulled it out. Soon the cake was covered in the dark caramel icing and he swore at himself for lacking his mother's artistic ability, wanting to decorate the cake but deciding that he didn't want to mess it up further. He let the cake cool as he gathered everything in his truck, making sure to remember his brothers' presents.
He had gotten Bo a portable jump starter, something he had seen someone use when he was stuck on the side of the road. Lester knew the battery on Bo's truck had seen better days and he for sure didn't want his older brother stuck somewhere. And for Vincent he knew he had to get him this old brush carrier he had seen while he was browsing some antique shop, he even managed to sweet talk the lady up front to hold it for him till he could afford it. The holder was sturdy and made out of leather that had softened from years of use, on the back had flowers and leaves carved into it, nothing too 'pretty' but something artsy that he knew his brother would like. He had also snagged some whiskey while out shopping, hoping that it would help with the nerves of them all.
Once everything was packed in his truck, Jonesy included, he set off to Ambrose, careful to not hit any bumps and disturb the dessert that sat between him and the animal. He said a silent prayer as he crept towards the washed out road, hoping that no one was at Ambrose besides his brothers, that'd be a real thorn in his side and would surely ruin his plan. As he drove through the town he breathed out a sigh of relief as he noticed nothing out of the ordinary, even better that Bo was too busy in his garage to pay any attention to him as he drove by and up to the house.
Lester was careful with taking everything in, not wanting to make too much commotion in case Vincent was up in the house and not in his workshop. Finally everything was set in the kitchen, he even cleaned up a little, more in compensation for taking and making a mess of the dishes but he wanted it to look a little nicer. He was giddy and he didn't know what to do next, did he get Bo or Vincent first? He really hoped they would like it, he would understand if they didn't, but he really did want today to be good for them. He decided to put on some music to drown out the silence the house held, it always unsettled him how quiet it could get.
Soon Lester was accompanied by the sound of Johnny Cash's 'Big River' and the house felt less vacant, he knew his brother's liked different types of music but they never grew out of their taste of the old country tapes his parents had. For a second he wondered if maybe the music might throw everything off, remind them too much of ma and pa, but he pushed the thought down when he remembered how well Bo and music paired after a few drinks.
After he decided everything was ready, Lester headed off to the House of Wax first, seeing as Vincent would listen to him if he asked him to wait in the living room whereas Bo would demand to know what's going on. Jonesy pranced alongside him, her collar jingling softly as she bounced with each step. "Hey girl, you excited?" He asked as they stopped outside the House of Wax before leaning down to pet her head. Jonesy barked and her tail wagged as she basked in the affection Lester was giving her.
The two were in and out quick, Lester telling Vincent to wait for him in the living room and leaving before his brother could respond. It had been easy but he knew getting Bo to come without question would be harder. As he and Jonesy walked to the gas station he went over in his head how would ask Bo without giving away too much, did they even know it was their birthdays? Lester stopped in his tracks.
Did they even know it was their birthdays?
Surely they had to, if they did they hadn't said anything about it. It made him sad when he thought about how it meant nothing to them, but to him it was the biggest day ever, it was the day two of the most important people came to be, two people he loved so much it hurt. He'd be damned if he let his parents continue to torment his brothers from the grave, to hell with them, Lester and his brothers were better without them and he'd show them.
With new found confidence he marched to the garage where his older brother was, head ducked under a hood of some car doing god knows what. Without looking up Bo called to him, "Hand me that wrench will'ya?" He extended his hand and waited for Lester to drop the metal tool in his hand before continuing to tinker with the vehicle. After a few beats Bo addressed him again, "Wha'cha want? M'busy."
Lester wrung the hem of his shirt in his hands as his mind scrambled to find what to say, finally settling on "I need ya up at th'house, got sumn to show ya." He turned on his heel and made his way back to the family home, ignoring Bo's demands for an answer. "I guess you'll have t'come and find out I s'pose!" He hollered back at his brother.
Upon entering the house Lester saw Vincent sitting on the couch, waiting like he expected him to be. Not too long after Lester came in Bo followed, his brows furrowed in confusion as he looked at both of his brothers. "Kay what? Th'hell you drag me up here for? Wha'cha gotta show me?"
Lester motioned for them to follow as he led them to the kitchen, Jonesy racing to be in front of the brothers, evidently more excited than the three men. On arrival Bo asked again what was going on and Lester so badly wished his brother had more patience. "Well..." He had started as he glanced between his brothers and then towards the pan that sat on the kitchen table. "Happy birthday?" Automatically Bo let out and groan and Lester had to move to stop him from leaving.
"You dragged my ass all the way up'ere t'tell me that? I'on got time fer this shit, told'ya I was busy." He stared down at his little brother before watching as his twin inspected the pan, peeling back the foil to reveal a cake, or something resembling a cake-- was it a cake? The fuck Lester bring with him?
Vincent turned back to dig through a drawer, grabbing a cake cutter and some plates from a cabinet. Lester stared at his feet as he shuffled slightly, embarrassed from the rejection. "Might not be good but I made a cake, got y'all sumn too.." His voice was small as he spoke to his brother, avoiding eye contact as he lifted his gaze.
Bo's face fell from anger to neutral as he watched his baby brother fidget, obviously upset from his reaction. "Shit, what th'hell, I reckon I could use a break." He ignored how fast Lester's expression lifted and instead head towards the table where the cake laid, "This car'mel cake?" Bo's eyebrows shot up and Vincent handed him a plate, he was shocked, he didn't know Lester was able to make it. He cut him a nice sized piece with his fork and shoveled it into his mouth.
Okay maybe he got ahead of himself with assuming.
The cake was mealy and the icing was burnt, the fuck did Lester do to this poor cake?
Lester watched as Bo stood there, a bite in his mouth but now chewing. "Well.. i'shure ish a cake" Bo muttered from behind the ruined dessert, trying to not hurt his brother's feelings too bad.
"Oh." Lester felt his shoulders slump and he held back a sigh, he had really really wanted the cake to be decent, "Y'ain't gotta eat it f'is bad.." He mumbled and watched as Vincent chewed his bite very slowly. Bo was quick to swallow, spitting it out would be too rude and he didn't think he could handle his little brother being more upset from the gesture. "Tasted like shit," he laughed and raked his plate in the trash before making his way to Lester, "well, it wasn't that bad but.." he paused, "but I sure do 'preciate it.." Before he could give it a second thought, Bo engulfed his little brother in his arms for a short embrace which Lester was quick to reciprocate. After a little Bo pulled away.
"So, what was that 'bout you gettin' us sumn?"

IOTA Reviews: Sole Crusher
Well... It's finally here... the episode introducing the new bee hero. And what do you know? It looks like I was right about how the new character would be portrayed.
It's kind of funny how I made predictions exaggerating what could happen, and they were surprisingly accurate. Isn't that funny?
youtube
Let's just get into the seventh (chronologically the seventh and the seventh episode in the season to air after āMr. Pigeon 72ā) episode of Miraculous Ladybug's fourth season: Sole Crusher. Damn, I hate that a pun this clever was used for the title.
We get to the point pretty quickly with the first scene being Zoe arriving in Paris and getting a tour of the city. She asks to stop at the Dupain-Cheng bakery, where she meets Marinette through some brief Unfunny Marinette Slapstick. The two quickly strike up a conversation.
I mean, it's not like Zoe is the sister of the absolute worst human being in existence, right?
Marinette compliments Zoe's shoes, and she points out that she designed them herself, and wrote every good thing anyone has ever said to her on them. But because she only has one friend, there's only a standard āI <3 Uā on the left shoe.
So Zoe leaves the bakery and heads to Le Grand Paris where she meets her mother, Audrey. Unlike how she talked with Marinette, Zoe pretends to be just as snobby as Audrey in order to fit in. She then meets up with Chloe, who criticizes her for having poor person things like a phone without any diamonds embedded in it. And then she sees Zoe's shoes.
Look, that meme was already dated when it was referenced in Black Panther three years ago. Please don't try to reference memes in 2021, Miraculous Ladybug.
Chloe offers some golden heels while saying that those kind of shoes are for winners to wear and crush the losers underneath. This is the only episode to mention this kind of ideology, and believe me, it gets worse when Chloe decides to teach Zoe how to be like her.
youtube
Get used to this. This episode is all about demolishing any semblance of likability in Chloe's character. Now that Astruc doesn't have to bother with writing Chloe with decency since she's not Queen Bee, watch as he turns her into an absolute caricature of her former self.
Yes, Chloe has ordered her father to give her a lot of frivolous things in the past, but she has been shown to care about him, like immediately rushing to hug him after she was safe in āOriginsā and showing concern for when he was akumatized into Malediktator while apologizing for causing it. For the love of God, one of the first things she did when she allied with Hawkmoth at the end of Season 3 was to have him unto her parents' akumatization. I guess she only cared about her rich parents for their status and not because she actually loved them right?
Next up on the list of Chloe's positive qualities to ruin is her friendship with Sabrina.
š¶It's seven o'clock in the morningš¶ š¶I can't believe they made this sceneš¶ š¶With the writing Astruc's enforcingš¶ š¶It's like he's trying to piss off meš¶
Yep, Chloe doesn't view Sabrina in a twisted view of friendship anymore. Now she's a slave. I'm not exaggerating by the way, he actually said that in a tweet.
THIS IS WHAT THOMAS ASTRUC ACTUALLY BELIEVES
Okay, so I guess all those times we saw Chloe playing superheroes with Sabrina in āAntibugā and āMiraculerā were just a slave driver playing with their property. Actually apologizing to Sabrina for getting her akumatized in those episodes? Protecting her from the Scarlet Akumas in āLadybugā? She was just interested in keeping her slave around. I think Astruc may have slept through the slavery unit in his history class. Yes, Sabrina was mostly used as a joke to show how controlling Chloe could be, but there were still semblances of an actual friendship between the two.
Chloe arrives at school and introduces Zoe as her half-sister, despite being the same age and having the same mother. Because I guess we can add basic biology to the list of things the writers don't understand. Now that we're at school, Chloe's friendship with Adrien is next up on the chopping block.
Yep, despite being Adrien's only friend and making a big deal about valuing his friendship to the point where she threw a big party just to make sure he wouldn't leave her and risked cooperating with an Akuma to save him, now Chloe just sees Adrien as a rich meal ticket. Two of the earliest episodes to show Chloe had a more compassionate side to her, and they just undid them. Even as much as I hated the episode, āFelixā showed Chloe was willing to cooperate with Marinette and her friends just to find a way to cheer Adrien up on the anniversary of his mother's not-death.
For the love of God, Astruc, 1984 was supposed to warn people about what could happen if they rewrote the past, not encourage people to rewrite the past. He probably finished Animal Farm thinking Snowball really did work alongside the humans, didn't he?
Marinette comes up and Zoe pretends to hate her, leading Marinette to wonder why she did that. She texts Zoe (she gave her number to her earlier) and invites her to a concert on the Liberty, but Chloe finds out. Zoe thinks fast and pretends it's just so she can torment her more. Chloe then takes out a book listing all the ways she can torture Marinette. I wonder if this is a metaphor for the writing process behind most of the episodes last season.
Zoe decides to go outside for some fresh air, and Andre comforts her. Funny how Andre bends over backwards to give Chloe whatever she wants, yet he's willing to actually talk to Zoe like an actual parent. Andre tries to cheer Zoe up, but she talks about her past where she had to put on an act so she would be liked, but (bet you've never heard this before) she just wants to be accepted for who she truly is. The surge of emotions is enough for Shadowmoth to akumatize her into Sole Crusher.
In addition to having one of the most clever puns for an Akuma name, I actually like Sole Crusher's design. Not only is it a good excuse to reuse Chloe's character design, it makes sense thematically, as Chloe was trying to mold Zoe into a copy of herself. The gold and diamonds also make sense given Chloe's love for shiny things. Her powers tie into the bizarre belief Chloe has about stepping on the winners. Whenever Sole Crusher kicks or steps on someone, she absorbs them and gets progressively bigger, making it easier to do so. While it's not cracking my top ten anytime soon, it's still an interesting character design.
Sole Crusher heads to the hotel to get Chloe, and she manages to get away pretty quickly. Maybe in an alternate universe, she's a track star? For some reason, she runs to the Dupain-Cheng bakery and then... Oh my God... pushes Marinette's parents so they get absorbed by Sole Crusher, before trying to do the same with Marinette.
youtube
When has Chloe ever done something like that? Whenever she endangered someone during an Akuma attack, it was unintentional or a result of her naivety. She was only trapped in Pixelator's dimension because Adrien tried diving to save her, she only alerted Rogercop to Ladybug's presence because she eagerly called out for her, and during āZombizouā she only tried to throw Sabrina towards the horde of kissing zombies once, and that was meant to highlight her growth. The only person to actually do stuff like this consistently is Lila, but I guess she got vaporized by Big Brother offscreen.
This episode is determined to make the audience hate Chloe by retconning everything about her character while portraying her as a complete monster. As bad as Chloe could get, she was never selfish enough to use anyone as a human shield. This kind of behavior honestly could be explained by saying Chloe was lashing out as a result of losing the Bee Miraculous permanently, but the events of the Season 3 finale aren't mentioned ONCE, not even in the next episode that introduces Queen Bee's replacement! How the hell can you set up the next Bee hero without explaining why the original needs to be replaced in the first place?! And trust me, I'm going to talk about Zoe replacing Chloe later.
Sole Crusher grabs Marinette in her hand, so the Horse Kwami, Kaalki, uses her power to teleport over to Adrien's house and inform him Ladybug needs help, meaning once again Adrien did nothing in this episode before becoming Cat Noir.
At the Liberty, Chloe offers more victims to Sole Crusher in the form of the band Kitty Section (consisting of Luka, Juleka, Rose, Ivan, and Mylene) and theatens the giant golden supervillain she can send her back to Paris, even though she's really not in a position to bargain right now. And she STILL continues to insult her. Do you hate Chloe yet? Come on, do you? The writers won't stop until you do.
After we see Sole Crusher's conflicted emotions, Marinette is set free by Cat Noir and transforms into Ladybug, immediately summoning her Lucky Charm, a shoehorn. They only learn Zoe's sneakers were where she were akumatized thanks to Chloe's ranting, so the episode unintentionally made Chloe save the day. Ladybug breaks into Le Grand Paris and breaks the sneakers where Zoe hid them, using the shoehorn to open a door. So Sole Crusher is de-evilized, Ladybug fixes the damage, and gives yet another charm to Zoe.
Afterwards, Zoe goes to the Liberty, apologizes for the act she put on, all while divulging to the audience her ātragic backstoryā.
Of course, everyone welcomes her with open arms.
And right here is where the biggest problem I have with Zoe as a character. I normally hesitate to use this term given how often it gets thrown around when criticizing characters these days, but I really can't say anything else.
Zoe... is a Mary Sue.
For those who don't know, the term Mary Sue originated in a Star Trek fanfiction from 1973 satirizing several self-insert stories at the time. Most of these stories showed a beautiful young woman joining the crew of the Enterprise and immediately gaining the attention of the crew. Mary Sue parodied this character archetype by showing how much she was appreciated by Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock, the latter being driven to tears at her funeral despite his species being emotionless normally.
What does this have to do with Zoe? She has the exact same storyline as Mary Sue in the parody fanfiction. Her mere presence is enough to make Chloe act extremely out of character in an attempt to make her look better, and as soon as she apologizes while giving a frankly vague backstory, everyone just accepts her as their friend, and I mean everyone in the entire class. I'm sorry, but it just doesn't feel earned. Why was she bullied at her old school? What did her bullies have against her? What caused her to stop going along with her peers, and why did everyone turn against her? How the hell did the bullies who put cockroaches in another student's locker get no punishment while the victim was forced to transfer schools? It's an intentionally unclear backstory designed to make the audience feel sympathetic towards Zoe without actually doing anything else.
I want to ask anyone reading this who watched the episode a question: Outside of her backstory, what do we actually know about Zoe?
What is her personality like? She's nice? Socially awkward? We've never had a character like that in Miraculous Ladybug before! Sorry Marinette, Adrien, Juleka, Nathaniel, Mylene, and Marc, there's a new character with more personality than all of you combined!
What are her goals? She wants to be an actress? Great, but why? Even though there's no clear answer for why Marinette loves fashion, or why Alya loves journalism, or why Nino loves DJing, you can still see the passion in their lives when they do something related to their goals. Zoe only says she wants to be an actress, connecting it to her people pleaser backstory (and given how it ended, she must be a terrible actress), and in the next episode, she immediately gets the lead role in a student film.
When Mylene got the starring role in the movie in āHorrificatorā, we at least got snippets of her acting skills in the same episode that established her desire to be an actress, which is also implied to be because she was inspired by her father in āThe Mimeā. She didn't just say she wanted to be an actress and got the leading role. She still had problems to overcome like her cowardice, which threw her own self-confidence into doubt. Here, Zoe just says she wants to be an actress, and is rewarded for no reason the very next episode.
Zoe basically exists only to be a foil to Chloe, and the writers had no idea what to do in terms of a personality, so they just dumped a bunch of extremely likable character traits onto her without thinking of how her character could come off. And like I said, she's a Mary Sue.
I'm not the only one who thinks this. I've seen a handful of posts on this very site calling Zoe a Mary Sue. In fact, I even asked another Tumblr user @anxresiā to quote their take on Zoe being a Mary Sue, which I couldn't even top in terms of accuracy. They basically listed off five things that made Zoe a Mary Sue.
She has to have a ātragic backstoryā so all the other characters will fall in love with her. Usually within minutes, in the very first episode theyāre introduced.
She has to have a supercute design so that the audience at home will fall in love with her. And if they donāt, theyāre automatically dismissed as āhaterzā even if their objections are purely from a writing POV.
Her only flaw will be thinking too little of herself. āWhat, lil olā me as the Bee Miraculous holder? With my shyness, colorful shoes, chic beret and personalized pink strip in my hair? Gosh, whoād have thought it?ā
The contrast to her half-sister will be a constant plot point, with Chloe always getting dumped on. āYou see, kids? Bad things happen to bad people. But you see this super-sweet girl over here? She gets a free DAD. Instant FRIENDS. To star in her own MOVIE. The chance to be a SUPERHERO, even though she only arrived last week. Who cares if she has no depth, no personality and barely any reason for being in the show, apart from being a massive āUp Yoursā to all the Chloe fans out there?ā
What about character development, Mr Generic Zag Guy? āDevelopment? Whatās that?! Zoe is already perfect as she is. The only ādevelopmentā sheāll receive is having her hair done in the first episode sheās introduced. Besides, Thatādā word is banned here at Zag studios. Why do you think we abandoned Chloeās stillborn arc so quickly? This is a KIDS show, why bother trying to create a complex character with more than one dimension?ā
This is essentially who Zoe is. She's perfect, has no character flaws, has a cute design so the audience will love her already, and was designed only to replace Chloe as Queen Bee. That's all she is.
So the episode ends with Zoe feeling happy at all the new friends she made while we get one of the most blatant attempts of symbolism in the ending card I've ever seen.
See, look. While Marinette is happily talking with Zoe with the image of Ladybug next to them, Chloe is to the far left with an EVIL purple aura, showing how bad she is compared to how great Zoe is. Only a braindead moron would actually like Chloe over the super awesome and pretty Zoe!
I'll give my final thoughts on the episode in the next part where I analyze this plotline as a whole.

"say it again, just one more time?" love of his life, god that was a title she would never tire of hearing. she'd inadvertently just given herself a brand new nickname. grape. fantastic. he was going to remember it just to torment her with it, that much she knew. worth it, for that one pecked kiss. eden did however, go with camille and leave the two men to it. "that's good, i'm going to make sure she's drunk enough for the both of us tonight. she can forgive me for the hangover later." she didn't realize what she'd just said, but she'd said it. oblivious to what she'd admitted she turned and agreed with cami. "i wont even tell him you called him an old man!" she joked, it was nice though, to see eden so bubbly and happy because there'd been a time in her life where that faded for a while, where she'd been a shell of herself shrouded in grief and loss. "
"alright then why don't you?" she came out with it, and stared at him a little blankly. "..teach me, how to throw a decent punch. i mean you kind of owe it to me, i had to change my locks all on my own and i spent my whole day off figuring that out you know?" old lady. not a handy man. if eris had not been locked up in the bathroom, she'd have been making a note to taunt joey over his very clear, soft spot for sienna. "unspoken agreement or not that uh.. that type of thing takes steel you know? she learnt that from someone, it didn't just appear.. and i think she learned that from you." sienna? her big heart? came from sharing everything with her dork of a sprinkler-armed brother. "oh.. oh put the words in my mouth! handsome younger guy? where?" she teases him, like a bickering back and forth. "hmm... another tear jerking speech do you think?"
"dislocated it.. far more painful to get a jaw back in once its swollen." she mumbles. "might have broke his ankle too.. by accident. definitely, by accident." and the guy would be too much of a coward to go reporting her for it, plus, he'd only make matters worse for himself given he'd harmed and officer. her lips pursed, her posture stiff and she should've said thank you, but it's like when cain caught her eye contact she couldn't do anything but keep her soft brown eyes, on his. she was listening, but was it true? that heart she had? that heart that she thought she'd fucking lock away from the world and never let anyone near it again, why would she? it'd been squandered and squished so, so many times and why? why, when she'd given it her best shot? why, when her parents should've shown her was love really was and yet that was handed to people that'd never asked for her to be born, they'd never asked for the responsibility of a torn up, shredded to pieces child, but they got it anyway... and who wanted a sister like her? who wanted a kid that didn't know how to accept the basics? who wanted an adult.. that could still wake up screaming? the thing was cain had someone, perfect and pleasant and lovely and he.. didn't want her. aelin was not her. her heart was beating, beating, thudding against her ribcage. had she ever drifted this close to anyone before? let someone hover just inches from her, his chest right there, a heart that beat beneath it that she did yearn to know. it was so close, and yet so far from her.
there was a lingering silence and she dares it, braves the little space to inch it to just a small, barely there, gap. he talked to aelin about her, eris never thought she'd even be a topic for conversation when they were in a room alone together. "okay." she breathed, soft and airy and what she was saying, she felt was not enough, but that one word was a confirmation. she'd heard him, she agreed, she didn't repulse or recoil. she stayed, in their space... in their messed up space where they were both wounded, where they were both two people broken enough to want to see the other exactly as they were, and still chose the other for all their flaws and imperfections, no matter how hard that'd end up being. "okay." she repeated, softer, a whisper. "then we figure it out.." her eyes dropped, kept dropping, from eyes to lips and.. could she? could she dare? try. she kept screaming the thought at her brain. try. she felt the tremble, the uncertainty, waited to be pushed away but eris leaned to his lips, and at first it was just her breath, just a shaky little breath and a tiny tremble to her lower lip but... try. "i want the silly things, that i was jealous about. i want to be patient with you too, and i want to try and be, or.. i want to...again.." her tongue wet her lips, this painful moment of her picking what word, of all of them, there was only one on the front of her mind. "you." had she said it? say it agian, try. "i want you."
for the first time in her life, she took something she wanted and what that was, was the softest way a human could kiss another human. her lips were a warm, light brush against his. it didn't change that her mind said this would end badly, it didn't change how her hands didn't know where to hold or squeeze or push or-... none of that changed, but what did, was how gentle she tried to be, scared that the first time she'd really tried to touch someone, she'd show them the same pain she'd learned but that was not the case, eris amorello was not venomous, she was an antidote, a well deserved secret, bottled.
wanted her, wants her, so why this? her mind was baffled and bundled and jumbled but, that is what good champagne did. she was giving him that pressed lip sternness that she'd mastered over the years. it only softened at the admittance over old valentines day grams, the balloons in her lockers that had her so flustered in the best way, a silly thing, but worth it for her beaming smile the whole day. she's quiet, even after he'd finished so sort of stayed in this moment of consideration on what the hell to say, her arms remained crossed and yet her eyes softened before anything else did. "...well then you best work double speed to get me that drink back.." it was moody and that was fine. atleast she would stay. "....and i hate to tell you this but you do actually owe me two shoulder rubs, a back massage, pineapple and ham pizza one day this week and... at least two latte's with hazelnut syrup, if you'd like my forgiveness." the fact she'd forgiven him was obvious, really obvious because she was trying her absolute best to not smirk. "i wont budge on the pizza either."
"good, then that is what we'll do." to rowan it was as simple as that, if she had a kid that was in her life then he'd be totally accepting of that and honestly, he liked kids. nothing bad about it. "eden, hi! i think i met you at the bakery like, yesterday? you were uh..." she took over. "fretting, over the wedding cake, yes! that'd be me and you were mr, black coffee and toast guy." he just gave a thumbs-up to that. "go ahead, i'll wait around inside." he nodded his head, left the girls to it and eden gives her a raised brow look. "who the hell is he? you so have to spill all the beans to me!" she wafted the hands in the air."i have like, two minutes to tell you before a room full of people toast me and benji again." she took a deep breath. "okay so, tonight, you need to drink like twice the wine and champagne for me okay? coz uh, well,i just need you to get drunk for.." shit cami already knew didn't she? eden cursed at herself inwardly. "you're my best friend okay, and i'll need you, i will... i'll need you to be with me in this too, okay? 'coz.. we do everything, together right? i know i have benji and all of that but, i still need you." the little sweet curve of her lips started. "i'm pregnant 'risa."
"a week?" he nearly gasped, hand over his heart for dramatic heart regardless. "i would never, i could never, you're the love of my life eden, we're bound to one another for all of eternity and then some. can't return me, exchange me or get a refund, so remember that, grape." he teases, pressing yet another kiss against her lips this time as he locked his finger around hers. attention turns back to the arlen's as he couldn't help but laugh along. benji still keeps close to eden after the exchange and turns to the former sheriff to look him over. "wouldn't miss the two of you gettin' married, come on." a quick kiss of his teeth as camille seemingly moves closer to her husband, let's him lean into her sneakily so his weight is off his leg and instead hers. "benji, honey, why don't you stay with him and i'll go with eden to help her find a chair and karisa, the two of you can, bond over being big ol' saps." she teases, turning back to eden as benji nods quickly. "i'll try to grab everyone else here, that way when you get back we can tell everyone what's going on," he agrees, leaning in for the upteenth kiss as mr. arlen nods to his wife. "come on, i gotta feelin' she's outside, she probably went to call nikki and give him his goodnight routine, he's with his father this weekend so," camille explains, shrugs and walks in step with eden to try to find the girl in question. "i'll let you talk to risa whenever we find her and i'll bring the old man his chair, deal?" camille offered as benji turned to mr. arlen, clearing his throat for a moment. "kinda feel bad interrupting everyone's moment, everyone's dancing and having fun y'know?" benji whispered to the older male, who again, sucked his teeth. "i got this," two fingers placed in his mouth so he could whistle as loud as needed be, of course it draws attention and he signals with the same fingers for everyone to join them.
"i would never let you do that, i would teach you how to throw a punch before you did that." he teases in response, darker hues seem to light up in her presence. pink lips part to respond to her initial question but soon shut to the revelation and he could only shake his head and laugh. of course she did. "she can be scary when she needs to be. i owe her one, i would have taken the fall for it, i'm sure one of my brothers would've bailed me out - but that's not the point. it's eris, the one i go to, my brothers are older than us, JD and angel have always been you know, together, so when eris came, we were close, still are and, it doesn't surprise me that she did that. we've always had that thing - unspoken agreement to look out for one another, guess this is just one of those times." he shrugs it off, lips pursed and brows raised as he rolls his eyes. "old ladies do always ask the handsome, younger folks to help them with shit, so yes maybe you are an old lady sienna," he teases, a smile that resembles hers as he offers an arm for her to take, turning to the whistling noise. "ah, well, we'll see if you're telling me the truth after uncle sammy is done telling us whatever it is he needs to tell us."
cain simply curses under his breath, nostrils flair as he blows air out of them, muscles in his jaw slacked. "hope you broke his jaw," a grumble, not directed towards her necessarily but to the asshole responsible for this. and in true cain fashion, he remains silent. works at the wound until it's cleaned up and remains in his position to redress the wound. whatever he has to say, he needs to look her in the eyes, show her that he means every word of it. they were officers, they knew how important body language and eye contact were when it comes to situations - one like this. so, he rises to his feet, keeps that close proximity and let's eris' hand fall. "old man always says family is determined by loyalty and behaviors, not blood or names." is what he starts off with, eyes boring into hers. despite the roughness in his voice his words are gentle. "i trust very few people, eris. the guys? are my friends but i don't trust them. not like i trust you. i trust you with my life, i trust your judgement, your decisions and your words. i trusted you the first day i met you. this, thing you've got, this passion to do the right thing, not because you want the fame that comes with it but because you want to do it because it'll make the world right, i admire you for it. it's that, that heart of yours ris, has had me tied around that finger of yours. and i hate it, drives me up the wall. i could give a shit about aelin. i don't give a damn what she can and can't give me because it isn't you. aelin isn't you."
for a moment he grows silent, debates his own emotional baggage before continuing. "our pasts ain't pretty, we both got our own demons, guilt and trauma we carry, right?" he asked, leaning against the counter as he picks up his suit jacket, extending it to her for her to take. "and i talked aelin's ear off about you every chance i got. you aren't just my partner, or an officer that works under me, a coworker . . . you are my best friend, the woman - the only woman besides my mother who can ever ground me, whenever i'm cornered, whenever i can't go on or if i think i'm not doin' it right, it's you. you are who i look to. you're my best friend, my headlights during a stormy night. and if i can't, i can't have that with you, ain't no one in this world that's ever goin' to get that from me. i ain't askin' for much eris, just . . . be patient with me, i can't - i can't express how i feel like i used to, i might get it wrong sometimes or piss you off, but, i do like you and i want this, whatever it is, wherever it goes, i want it with you. nobody else but you."
her words sink in. dig into the depths of his chest and make it tight. and he does take a step back when the finger is raised - old childhood habit as his expression softened. "hey, hey, now wait, wait a minute," jackie called out, "oblivious to things woulda been the word i would have used but airhead or dumb blonde ain't it," almost as if he's scolding her as he tries to figure out whether or not to close the distance. "i don't - i don't want the stand up girl! i wanted you - want you!" he shouts, corrects himself and turns to the occupants on the dance floor who look at him. so, now he has no choice but to close the distance. "winona maristela, i have liked you since my freshman year of high school. those - horribly written poems written on the valentine day grams you got every year from your anonymous admirer, or the balloons in your locker with hand written notes, that was me, i - god, and when you asked me to prom i thought, wow maybe - maybe she sees me for me you know? not this - broken kid who had a shitty life and when i saw you at the bookstore and i kept, bringin' you coffee, i thought you know, maybe i can do it. maybe i can - i can make that leap of faith. and i'm sorry that i didn't do it, i was scared. i was scared that you had someone and that my teenage crush would just go away but it didn't. i only asked that stand up girl to be my date so it wouldn't hurt to see you with someone else, i just, i fucked up, i know, i get it i just - i'm sorry, just please, please do not let this ruin your night. you were having so much fun dancin' and drinkin' i don't - want you to not do that because i fucked up."
the blonde held her breath for a few beats of a moment, darker hues roaming his features for an inkling for what comes next. shoulders soon slack as she relaxes, muscles in her jaw do clench to try to conceal the emotion that she tries to swallow. "oh," a blurt as she quickly shakes her head, "i would love that, so would he, thank you for," a breath as she waves her hand in the air. ". . . being so understandin'. it's not the most ideal situation but, no matter my feelings i always do what's best for nikki and i - you have no idea how much this means to me, you wantin' to do all that," she replies, warm smile as she let's out a laugh, motioning for him to follow her as she leads them into the venue, brows quickly furrowing when she makes eye contact with eden. "oh! what are you doin' out here? shouldn't you be dancin' with your husband?" karisa teases, turning to rowan. "rowan, this is my best friend eden, eden this is rowan," but she senses something - can't place it but she does. "uh, are you alright shortstack? you look like you're about to tell me the sky's fallin'."

This is a bit of something that got in my way while I was working on the ML ballet AU. Turns out I still have a grain or two of Lila salt in me. Quickspinnerās Out of Your League (from the All That Remains collection) needs the credit for a bit of backstory that I had in mind here. And yes, this is Lukanette. Always.
Lila wasnāt above using her motherās sense of guilt to her own advantage. She also had no problem with feeding that guilt. A few sighs and teary comments when her mother (yet again) had to cancel on Lila to deal with something at the embassy, or a subtle reminder about all the times Lila had been left on her own in their apartment was all grist to the mill, and Lila had to admit that it had paid off in a big way this time.
Her mother had pulled every string and favour at her disposal for Lilaās birthday party, and Jagged Stone himself was going to be putting in an appearance. Lila was jubilant.
She watched the ballroom at the embassy ā how her mother had managed that one Lila didnāt know, and honestly didnāt care ā filling up with her classmates and everyone sheād ever met, and she allowed herself a satisfied smile.
Of course, Marinette wasnāt there. Lila had had an enjoyable month of it, tormenting the goody-two-shoes over it, and the beautiful part was that no one had even caught a hint of what she was really doing. She hadnāt been so crass as to leave Marinette out of the party invitations, oh no! She had handed the girl a gilt-edged invite with her most charming, and insincere, smile as she made a point of telling Marinette how much she hoped that Marinette would be there. Their classmates had eaten it up with a spoon, falling all over Lila to tell her how generous and forgiving she was, given the way Marinette had been so hostile to her, and all the while Lila had smiled sweetly and watched Marinette twist in the trap.
If Marinette begged off the party, she was the bad guy for refusing Lilaās olive branch. If Marinette came, then Lila won, and she would get to watch Marinette swallow her pride and suffer all night, or crack and create drama. Either way, it was all good, and Lila had had fun making little digs and comments about the party in front of Marinette for the weeks leading up to it.
As Lila accepted everyoneās tributes and praise, greeting each new arrival with becoming diffidence and subtly trying to gauge the worth of each gift that they piled on the table at the entrance, she came to the conclusion that Marinette had decided not to put in an appearance. Her smile grew wider.
āLila!ā Alya had arrived, and swept her into a hug, surveying the ballroom, and the tables of food, with an impressed eye. Behind her, Nino grinned and bobbed his head in greeting. āAmazing party, girl. And I canāt believe you got Jagged Stone to come!ā
Lila gave her a modest smile. āItās all about who you know, and Jagged was more than happy to come when he heard it was for my birthday.ā She looked around as if searching for something, and made her eyes wide and hopeful. āDidā¦ did Marinette come with you?ā
Alya shifted uncomfortably. āErā¦ Marinette couldnāt make it. But she asked me to wish you a happy birthday.ā
Oh, no, she didnāt, Lila thought, suppressing the smirk that pulled at the corners of her mouth. Alya, you liar.
She forced her face into a sorrowful pout with just the right touch of hurt. āItās okay. It would have been nice if we could put aside whatever this grudge is that Marinette has against me just for once, but I guess notā¦ā
Alya and Nino smiled awkwardly. And then her mother touched her arm, a harried expression on her face as she drew Lila away out of earshot for a moment.
āLila, sweetheart, thereās some bad news,ā her mother said anxiously, and Lila felt her smile slip a little. āWeāve just had word that Jagged Stone had to cancel at the last minute.ā
āWhat do you mean, Jagged Stone cancelled?ā Lila almost shrieked. A few heads turned towards them, and Lila brought herself back under control before they could overhear. āMama, you need to fix this. Get him back!ā
āSweetheart, I canāt. His agent said it was unavoidable, and theyāre paying the late cancellation fine in the contract. At this late notice I canāt get anyone else to come instead.ā
Lila let her eyes fill with tears ā sheād practised tearing up in front of her mirror, but in this case the tears were very real.
āMama,ā she insisted, and the harried lines on her motherās face deepened.
āYouāll still have a lovely party,ā her mother said weakly. āThe food is wonderful, and you still have the DJ for entertainment.ā
āBut I told everyone that Jagged Stone was coming!ā
āIām so sorry, darling.ā Her head turned towards the doorway, where an aide was waving a phone at her. āI have to go take this call.ā
The moment that her mother had turned away, Lilaās mouth pinched with anger and frustration, and she barely stopped herself from stamping her foot.
āHey girl, is everything okay?ā
She heard Alyaās voice call out to her, and she smoothed out her face, spinning around with artificial enthusiasm. Several of their classmates were clustered behind Alya, and she turned a smile on them as well.
āSo,ā Alya continued, āweāre all really excited! Whenās Jagged getting here?ā
Lila gave a moue of only slightly exaggerated disappointment.
āCan you believe it?ā she sighed, one hand fluttering up to her chest. āJagged had to cancel. It was last minute, and Iām so worried itās because that awful throat condition of his has flared up again.ā Her hand went to her mouth. āOh no! You canāt tell anyone about it, no one is supposed to know, but that was why he couldnāt do the zoom call with the class last month like heād promised.ā
There was a ripple of sympathy and concern through her classmates, but then Alix made a sceptical noise at the back of the group.
āThroat condition? But you said it was sunspot interference with the internet connection.ā
āNo, I was trying to keep his throat problems secret-ā
āIt was Clara Nightingale you said had a serious throat condition, and that was why she had to cancel helping out with the charity auction like sheād told you,ā Alix interrupted.
āNo, that was Jagged-ā
āIf recall accurately,ā Max spoke up, āand I do, Clara Nightingale had the throat condition. I could have Markov replay the conversation,ā he added helpfully, and Lila spun around in dismay.
āNo, thatās not-ā
āThere have been a lot of cancellations,ā Alix said in growing suspicion. Lila could see the faces around her registering confusion, and there was a growing murmur as her classmates tallied things up. She had to stop this before they came to the realisation thatā¦
āWhat about that interview you promised me with Ladybug?ā Alya was asking her, her voice sharp. āThe one that got cancelled because of an akuma, except I could never find anything about that akuma, and you never rescheduled. And that meeting that Nino was supposed to have with that director?ā
Nino wasnāt saying anything, his face hidden by his cap as he stared at the floor. The muttering was growing louder now as more people were working things out and the number of promises mounted up.
āOh my god,ā Juleka mumbled behind the fall of her streaked black and purple hair. āHe was right.ā
āWho?ā Rose asked, but Alix was talking again before Juleka could answer.
āYou didnāt need to fib about Jagged Stone being here to get us to come to your party, Lila,ā Alix said as the expressions turned to disgust and disbelief.
āBut I didnāt!ā Lila protested, and for once she had been telling the truth. āI swear, Jagged really was coming. You have to believe me!ā
āI said it was a bit hinky that Jagged Stone would have agreed to play a teenage party like this,ā Alix told the group around her.
āIām not lying!ā Lila insisted, her voice growing shrill as the expressions turned to disgust and disbelief. āHe did a signing for Chloe.ā
āYeah, well, thatās Chloe, and the mayor himself roped him into that.ā
āBut my mother works for the embassy! And I saved his kitten!ā
Again, Alix snorted, and Alya had her arms folded now, frowning.
āYou know, I couldnāt find anything about that online, or about Jagged even having a kitten. The more I think about it, the more I wonder why I believed that in the first place.ā
āYou believed Marinette,ā she couldnāt help the slight snarl at that name, āwhen she said she designed stuff for Jagged and he came to her house.ā
āBut she didnāt say that,ā Nino pointed out. āWe saw all of that for ourselves. But now I think about it, I havenāt seen anything that proves youāve even met him.ā
āBut I have! He really was coming, and he was going to sing Happy Birthday to me! He just had to cancel.ā
āSure, Lila.ā
After all the stories Lila had spun, and the lies and embellishments, how could it be the truth that they refused to believe? The group drifted away from her while Lila stared after them in open-mouthed shock. She was left in a spreading circle of isolation at her own party.
The only person who acknowledged her existence was the tall boy with the blue hair over near the buffet table. Lila frowned, trying to work out where she knew him from. He was older than her class, and the ripped jeans and scruffy hoodie were out of place among the smartly dressed guests, but he looked familiar, and what was he doing at her party anyway? He raised the vol au vent in his hand in an unsmiling salute.
Lila made her way over to him.
āNow, where do I know you from?ā she asked with an attempt at coyness, in spite of the fury still seething through her at her classmatesā revolt. His expression didnāt change.
āWeāve met before. Iām Julekaās brother, Luka.ā
Julekaās brother. Marinette. She had a sudden memory of the steps outside the school and an older boy with blue hair and a guitar slung over his back, coolly warning her about what would happen if she messed with Marinette or his sister. Her eyes narrowed.
He said, āI just wanted to say Happy Birthday, and Iām sorry to hear that Jagged fell through on you.ā
āJagged?ā Lila sucked in a breath at that. āWhat do you know about Jagged Stone?ā
āYou underestimated Marinette,ā the blue-haired boy said calmly. āItās all about who you know, isnāt that what you said, Lila? Itās all about connections. Except Marinetteās are real.ā
She let out a smothered shriek.
āMarinette did this! How could she-ā
Luka was shaking his head. āMarinette didnāt do a thing. Sheās been trying so hard to take the high road, and sheās not vindictive. I did warn you, though, what would happen if you threatened someone I care about again ā just because I donāt want to play your kind of games doesnāt mean I canāt or wonāt.ā
āThen you turned them all against me! You-ā
āI didn't even need to do that,ā Luka said, and gave her an infuriatingly composed smile. āIn the end, all I really needed to do was tell my dear old dad how you treated his favourite designer. I didnāt even have to bend the truth to do it, and the music just played from there.ā
Lilaās mouth fell open. āJagged Stoneā¦ is your father?!ā
āSurprised the hell out of me, too,ā Luka muttered, and finished the pastry he was holding. He dusted the crumbs off his hands.
āConnections,ā Luka said, and shoved himself away from the table. āI have them too, and Iām more than willing to use them for Marinetteās sake. Thank you for the lovely party.ā
He gave her a little wave and walked away, leaving her standing there in the ruins of her reputation.

Rebecca Anne Shelby
- Born in December 1908, making her about 11 months younger than Finn
- Nobody really calls her Rebecca, unless she's in trouble, mostly it's Becca. Though her family also uses Becky, Bec, and Becs.
- Arthur is the only one to call her Becky-Anne.
- She has pretty good relationships with all of her siblings, but she's probably the closest with John and Finn.
- Finn doesn't even try to hide the fact he's so jealous that she can get away with almost anything when it comes to their older brothers. All Becca really ever has to do is look a little sad and dejected while she apologises, and the most fearsome men in Birmingham crumble like cheap plaster.
- Of course, Becca is always quick to reminder her brother when ever he starts sulking that he is basically free to come and go at his own discretion. Unlike her who isn't even allowed to leave the house without one of them with her. Or, on very rare occasions, Isaiah.
- Unlike most of her family, Becca has stayed in school, and is even considering the idea of going to college.
- Provided she can swing Tommy on the idea... though that shouldn't be too hard of a sell considering how hard all of her siblings have pushed to keep her in school.
- Mostly though, she's hoping to leverage a higher education into a reason for her brother to finally relent and let her into the family business. Even if it's just the legal side.
- She has a natural gift for music, and has been an excellent singer since she was little.
- Arthur was the one who bought her, her first violin, and with some teaching she got the hang of it pretty fast.
- Of course she was taught with classical pieces, and there's a few that she likes and even enjoys playing... but she truly loves the more folksy style music.
- Esme and Johnny Dogs absolutely were not the ones to teach her those songs. Not at all.
- Polly just rolls her eyes and smiles fondly when Tommy tries to complain
"It's in her blood as much as horses are in your Thomas."
-*-*-*-*-*-
Relationships:
Tommy:
- If there was anyone in Becca's life that could be considered her father figure, it's Tommy.
- At all of 18 years old, Tommy took on the majority of the responsibilities of raising Becca when their mother passed.
- He's the one who taught her how to walk and talk, and read and write. As well as the things like how to tie her shoes, ride a horse, and even helping with her homework when need be.
- Not that Thomas Shelby would ever admit it outloud, to anybody, but Becca's had him wrapped around her little finger from day one.
- Of course the family and anybody who actually knows Tommy already knows this, because the man really is absolute shit at hiding it.
Arthur:
- Arthur has always been Becca's protector.
- It doesn't matter what she gets up to or what kind of trouble she finds herself in. Whenever she needs him, Arthur has always been there to catch her.
- He's always quick to jump to her defense, and Becca knows she can go to him with anything.
- Out of everyone, Arthur spoils her the most.
- When she was little, Becca developed the habit of falling asleep in her brothers laps when she would stay up late with them. Once she started getting bigger, Tommy and John would wake her up and send her to bed, but it doesn't matter how old she is, Arthur still carries her to bed at the end of the night.
John:
- If Arthur is her protector, and Tommy is her father figure, then John's role has to be Becca's best friend.
- While the whole family treats her as something special that needs protecting and looking after, John's always had a more laxed, gentle approach to how he goes about it.
- He keeps her out of trouble by keeping her close, and he keeps her close by making her want to be there.
- The two tease and torment eachother to no end, which more often than not ends up in them chasing eachother, or rolling around in the ground play fighting.
- Easily the most physically affectionate siblings in the family.
Ada:
- As the only two girls, Ada and Becca have always shared a special bond.
- They're sisters, so of course they fight and pick at eachother like nobody's business, but that can flip on a dime, and they become an absolutely terrifying united front.
- Especially against their brothers.
- Honestly, most of the family consider themselves extremely lucky that Becca isn't nearly as confrontational as Ada can be, other wise they could very well be over run.
Finn:
- These two have been partners in crime their entire lives.
- They actually make quite the terrifying duo when left alone for any great length of time. They absolutely will find something to get up to.
- They also have their own notoriously united front, and have absolutely covered for eachother so seamlessly that the rest of their family was none the wiser.
- When confronted about it, the excuse was that there's such a big age gap between them and the rest of the family, and sometimes you've just got to stick together if you want any hope of being taken seriously.
Polly:
- God bless Polly Gray, she really did try with all of her nieces and nephews.
- Becca is probably the one she's had the most success with... At least Becca is the one to actually listen more often than not, and gives her the least amount of worry.
- Quite literally the mother Becca never got to have, the bond between the two is unshakable.
- Along with the mother-daughter-esque bond, Polly and Becca also have a shared love discussing how taxing and grating their family can be (read: They really, really like to talk shit about everyone when they're being dumb.)
Michael:
- Becca and Michael have a bit of a love/hate relationship.
- Very similar to her and John, Becca and Michael bicker and pick at eachother at any given opportunity.
- Unlike her and John however, the two of them have a tendency to escalate in to real fights
- Like actual, no holds bared screaming matches, with insults being thrown around like water. And the occasional object.
- That's usually the time the rest of the family will intervene lest one of them actually maim the other.
- They'll usually go a couple days without so much as acknowledging the others existence after that while the wait for the dust to settle.
- Even if they're not talking, they still won't hesitate to come to the others defense - Family is still family, even if they're stupid.
- One notable occasion, Michael completely dislocated a man's jaw who couldn't figure out how to keep his hands to himself, only to go right back to ignoring Becca once he was sure she was alright.

Love, Uncle Sy
Genre: Fan Fiction (Sand Castle) Pairing: N/A Warnings: Itās so fluffy!Ā Rating: G Length: Drabble Disclaimer: a strict work of fiction, I own nothing except the original characters and the plot line. In no way am I affiliated to any of it. Ā
A/N: I had fun with Sy and Willow, making Christmas cookies, so I brought them back for some adorable birthday fluff.
Henry Cavill Master List
Saturday morning, sun barely above the horizon and Sy was wide awake. As usual, his morning began in the kitchen, a pot of coffee perfuming the room while accompanied by the humid scent of dishwasher and frying bacon. He'd woke this morning, tossing and turning, a cold sweat cresting his brow. Nothing a shower and a soothing meditation tape wouldn't temporarily fix. Had he not been woke by the nightmares, Sy would have planned to sleep in ā or his version of sleeping in, at least.
Waking from a nightmare on your birthday, should be criminal. Never the less, he had work to do once breakfast was over. In a few hours, he had to pack his truck with a few party favours and drive over to the local horse farm where his niece took lessons every Saturday morning. While Sy was turning older than he cared to remember, today was his niece's seventh birthday.
The grizzled Army vet loved all of his nieces and nephews, but Willow was certainly his favourite. She was his mini-me. His tiny partner in crime. His shadow, and the light of his life. From the moment Sy had held his birthday twin, he'd been in love. His heart was melting and there was nothing that he wouldn't do for that child.
Calling the dog back inside, he gave a scratch behind the ears. Plating his bacon and a piece of toast, saving a few pieces to cool as a treat for the faithful canine. Checking his watch, Sy frowned, 6AM was a little too early to call his birthday girl. He'd have to wait until he saw her later this morning, when he would also be presenting her with the most perfect present in the world.
Around 10AM Sy's truck was packed with a few birthday banners, balloons, cupcakes, and a giant pink sparkly bow. Willow's lesson ended at 11:30, if he wanted to get there and allow his sister time to set up then he had to hurry. Sy couldn't wait to see his niece's face, when he presented her with the present that he'd bought her. He could picture it now, her eyes shining and that adorable smile, ear to ear, squealing in pure delight.
Arriving while Willow was busy cleaning her tack, Sy managed to get somewhat set up. A kind parent helping to set up made it easier on Sy. One last thing to get from the truck and they were set. Sy shut the door, the case of cupcakes in his arm. Walking back to the surprise location, the last thing he'd expected when he stepped inside the barn was Willow running towards him, tears streaming down her face, sniffling and trying to contain the sobs of anguish. Stopping in his tracks, Sy removed his sunglasses, intercepting the little girl rushing towards him at the speed of light.
āUncle Sy,ā Willow rushed her uncle, tears in her eyes. Wrapping her arms around his waist, she sniffled.
āHey Wispy, what's wrong Bub?ā Sy stroked the back of her head, the braided pig tails messed from their time under her helmet.
āOh Uncle Sy.ā She wailed, bottom lip trembling. A child crying on their birthday was never a good sign. Squatting down to be the same height as his niece, Sy wiped her eyes. āCheckers.ā
āWhat about him?ā
āHe's,ā hiccup, āhe...ā she sobbed. āHe's sold.ā
Biting his bottom lip, Sy felt for the little girl. He wished they could have told her before now, but that would have ruined the entire birthday surprise. Of course her favourite pony had sold, the second Sy had heard that the striking spotted pony had a price tag, he called and negotiated the sale. Checkers had sold nearly two weeks ago, his new owner none the wiser that the pony even belonged to her ā at her Uncle's request.
Aimee and Mike had been discussing buying their daughter her own pony, though funds and the right pony were never aligned. When Sy heard that the favourite lesson pony was going to be sold, he discussed it with his sister and knew what he had to do.
Seeing Willow sobbing uncontrollably was going to make the reveal that much sweeter. Even so, knowing something his niece did not, seeing her in such a state broke Sy's heart.
āOh Wispy,ā Sy soothed her, bringing her in for a tight hug. āI know it hurts now, but just think, Checkers is going to have a little girl of his very own. Don't ponies deserve a good home and all the love?ā
āYeah, but I'm going to miss him. I wish I could have him. I would love him forever, Uncle Sy.ā
āI know bub, I know.ā Gently giving her a squeeze, Sy let her go rubbing the tears away from her cheeks. āHow 'bout you go finish putting your things away, then come find me and we can give Checkers some treats and tell him what a good pony he is?ā
āOkay.ā Willow nodded, hiccupping through a new batch of silent tears.
Close one. Sy stood, blowing out a heavy breath.
He had to hurry, if he wanted to be set up by the time Willow came back. He picked up the case of cupcakes. Delicately arranged in the shape of a pony, of course. Sy had worked hard baking, decorating, and creating the perfect birthday treat. Walking through the aisle of the small riding facility, Sy smiled seeing his sister and nephew waiting at the party site.
They had arranged to meet up after Willow's lesson, catching a few of her horsey friends before they left. Parents happy to wait for an extra hour to help the little girl celebrate her birthday. Sending Willow to the car to put her things away had been the only way Sy could get her far enough away to make their plan work.
āSy, Happy birthday.ā Aimee hugged her brother tightly. Careful not to squish the container of cupcakes that he held.
āThank ya.ā He kissed her cheek, smiling wide. Nodding to Ben, who would rather be anywhere else right now. āWispy was pretty upset,ā he commented glancing over at the pony who was standing in a holding paddock near by. āI nearly broke, Aim.ā
āOh god,ā Aimee rolled her eyes, āwho knew all it took to break the soldier was a crying child.ā
āShe's gutted,ā He frowned, setting the cupcakes down on a small table decorated with a pink birthday sign, matching plates, and cups.
āWon't be for long,ā Ben shrugged.
āSure you and Mike are okay with this?ā Eyeing his sister, Sy smirked adjusting his cap.
āWell, we kind of need to be. It's not like we've a choice.ā
āCourse you do, if you don't want Ā the pony, I am sure Checkers and I would get on fine.ā laughing, Sy took a good look at the pony who was content to eat the hay he'd been given. The big sparkly pink bow around his neck didn't seem to hinder him any. āHe's a good looking boy.ā
āI'd like to see you on that pony.ā Her laughing intensified, Aimee snorted slapping Sy in the arm.
Her giant of a brother would look insane on the pony, even if Checkers was on the bigger end of being a pony. Hell, the last time she'd seen Sy ride he was maybe twelve, before girls and other interests had taken over his attention. Back then he would have loved to have his own pony. Their parents had allowed Aimee to begin taking lessons, when Sy had tagged along, insisting that he be allowed to ride too. Fearless, the six year old climbed onto the horse assigned to him and didn't bother to look back. For a few years everyone had began to assume that he'd eventually end up in high school rodeo, after that he'd find a woman and settle down on a farm somewhere.
Heh. What a life that would have been. A wife and kids were evidently not in the cards for this Syverson. He loved his nieces and nephews, but the scars his life bore, it would be unfair to condemn a child to a father who was broken and haunted by war. Clouds settling in his mind, Sy cleared his throat bringing himself back to the present matter at hand. Tormenting his sister.
āI happen to be a fine rider.ā Winking at Ben; Sy nudged his sister. āI remember being a much better rider than some others that I know.ā
āShut up, I was a good rider.ā Defending herself, Aimee stuck her tongue out at him.
āI know you were, but I was better that's all.ā grinning from ear to ear, Sy ruffled his sister's hair, checking his watch. Willow was still missing, unlike her. āShould I go find Wispy? Bring her over?ā
āUh, yeah. If you don't mind.ā Aimee nodded, checking her watch. The car had been unlocked, there was no obvious reason for her daughter to be held up.
Walking to the parking area, Sy laid his sights on the suv belonging to his sister. The doors were all shut and no sign of Willow. His truck, parked beside it was also vacant. In the back of the suv, Willow's stuff was tossed in. It looked like she had thrown it and ran.
āWispy?ā his heart began to thump when the car was clear. Logically, Sy knew that she couldn't have gone far. The soldier in him told Sy that there was no need to panic. The uncle side tried to take over his wildest imagination. No, sir he was not allowing those thoughts in. Listening for a moment, he took a deep breath steadying his heart and calming the pounding in his veins. āWillow?ā
Behind him, he could hear a rustling in the grass. All the dogs were around the back and this was too big to be a barn cat. Following the noise around the corner of the shed, Sy's heartbeat returned to normal finding Willow sitting in the grass. Knees to her chin, her face stained with tears, her jeans dirty, boots covered in dust.
āYou coming, birthday girl?ā
āUncle Sy?ā Willow sighed, rubbing her hands against her eyes.
āYeah?ā
āMy heart hurts. Is this what it's like when you have a broken heart?ā
āWispy, bub.ā Sinking down to sit beside her on the grass, Sy felt his chest tighten. Wishing that Aimee had never mentioned the sale.
āI miss him already.ā
āI know, but for now he's still here and he wants those carrots that I brought.ā Trying his best to encourage his tiny shadow, Sy smiled. āIf we go see him now, it means we get to spend more time enjoying Checkers than worrying. We can't predict tomorrow.ā
Leaning into her uncle, Willow sighed. āBut why did he have to sell? I love him, I don't want him going to a new home and on my birthday.ā
āOh Wispy,ā Sy kissed the top of her head. He wanted to tell her, reassure her that Checkers wasn't going anywhere, but he didn't want to ruin the surprise just yet. āHonestly, bub, I don't know what to tell you. What I can tell you is that it won't always hurt.ā
āAre you sure?ā
āPositive. Now, your ma is waiting for us. Some of your friends have stayed, too. There are cupcakes.ā
āReally? But I thought we were going to feed Checkers.ā
āWe are, after. I wasn't supposed to tell you about the cupcakes, but I even made them myself for you. Come on, let's go enjoy the day. It's our birthday! No tears on our birthday.ā Standing, Sy held his hand out to Willow.
Grasping her Uncle's hand, she squeaked when he grabbed her and tossed her over his shoulder. Laughing hysterically, Willow flopped around on his back, bracing herself with her elbows as he walked through the yard.
Seeing Sy with Willow over his shoulder, Aimee instructed Ben to grab Checkers and have him ready for his sister. Whatever. Ben crawled through the wooden fence, clipping a pink lead line onto the pony and coaxing him away from he hay. His sister was about to lose her mind. Straightening the bow, Ben smiled fondly at the thought of how happy his little sister would be.
āHappy Birthday, Wispy!ā Sy announced setting her down, back to Checkers.
āIs this all mine?ā Willow's eyes were wide as she stared up at her uncle.
āSure is.ā Nodding, Sy smiled with pride.
A few of the kids who had stayed were giddy with anticipation. Wishing their friend a happy birthday, waiting for the big moment. Turning to look at her mom, Willow spotted her brother with the pony. More tears in her eyes, she began to loudly sob. Her body shaking, words escaping her. Kneeling down beside his niece, Sy sniffed back his own tears.
āHappy birthday, Willow. He's all yours.ā
āM-mine?ā
āYeah sweetheart, Checkers is all yours. If you want him.ā
āI do. I really do, I love him so much.ā Willow rushed the gate, fumbling to undo the latch. Frustrated she darted under the fence, throwing her arms around the pony's neck, hugging him tightly. āMy own pony,ā She whispered, causing Ben to smile. Handing his sister the lead line, Ben took a step back allowing his mom to take Ā photo of the moment.
āSend me a copy, will ya Aims.ā Sy wiped his hand across his eyes, putting his sunglasses on to hide the tears.
āYou big softie.ā Aimee nudged him. āGo on, get in the photo with them.ā She urged her brother.
Stepping into the small paddock, unlatching the gate ā unlike his niece and nephew there was no way in hell Sy was darting through the fence boards. He stood next to Willow for a moment, stroking the spotted neck of the content pony. Whispering softly to Checkers about what a good sport he'd been.
āI can't believe it.ā whispering, Willow looked up at her uncle. āHe's all mine.ā
āHe sure is, bub.ā Holding out his arms Sy smiled when Willow rushed into them. Hugging her uncle tightly. Scooping her up, Sy took the lead line from her, holding Checkers beside them while Aimee took some photos. āHappy birthday, Wispy.ā Sy smiled kissing her cheek.
āHappy birthday, Uncle Sy. Sorry that I didn't get you a pony.ā Willow kissed his cheek, hugging her arms around his neck.

-----
ā God damn-it Howard, just tell me what yah told the sheriff. Tell me where the fuck yah think he is. And donāt bullshit me either,ā Y/n said staring the deputy down with a hard stare, trying to get much needed information out of him. To find her best friendās brother, to find her friend, to find the stupid boy she was in love with.Ā
ā I canāt tell yah that Y/n, yah know that..ā
ā And yah know me, and Arvin. And yah knew Lenora too. Arvin was only doing what he needed to do to protect āer, to avenge āer,ā Y/n knew Howard had always liked Lenora but she was too wrapped up in god and running away from the boys that would torment her at school to notice. Sure, Y/n was using that to her advantage but she needed to use all that she had if she was gonna find Arvin.Ā
ā Donāt yah use that on me, look I care about yah guys. I know Arvin wouldnāt hurt nobody that didnāt deserve it. But I canāt tell yah where he is, and the Sheriffās got it handled. He can take care of Arvin by himself, he donāt need a girl such as yourself getting in the middle.ā
ā But he donāt know Arvin like I do. And that sheriff donāt use ever use his god damn head. I should know with how handled mah daddy,ā Y/n and the Sheriff from Knockemstiff werenāt too friendly with one another. Back when Y/n was nothing but youngling, only 13 at the time, Sheriff Bodecker blew the head off her Daddy. Bedecker did protect her and her Mama that night. But Bodecker wasnāt there to help them. He was there for money her father owned him, and the man just wouldnāt give it up. So just seeing the man hit his daughter gave him enough reason to kill him and get his money. Y/n didnāt like how it went down, sheād seen the whole thing. All the yelling and the big shot gun. Got stricken across the face and then, her Daddy being shot.Ā
ā I just know that Sheriff is gonna do somethinā to sent āim off and Arvin might do somethinā he gonna regret. Please just tell me where yah think he is. I need to find āim Howard. I need to find him before he does somethinā stupid again. Please.āĀ
Howard sighs, looking at the young girl in front of him. She was a good friend, he knew that much and he knew her since they were young. Arvin and him werenāt the best of friends, but they knew each other and that was enough. He knew Arvin cared for Lenora deeply and heād do anything to protect her. And he knew Arvin loved Y/n, the two were so enamored in the other that they didnāt even know they held the same feelings. But with their feeling, he knew that Y/n was the best bet to help Arvin out of the hole heās dug himself into.Ā
ā Alright, alright Iāll tell yah. But donāt get yerself killed, Kay?ā Y/n nodded happily.Ā
ā We think he went back to Knockemstiff. Where he used to live as a kid, to his old house or somethinā... Now git, and donāt you tell nobody I to-ā He was interrupted by the young girl hugging him tight.Ā
āYah wonāt regret this, thank you.ā And then she ran to her truck and made her way to knockemstiff, hoping she wasnāt too late to stop Arvin from taking another life if he felt he had to.Ā
----
Shit is a word that Arvin repeated over and over again in his head as the Sheriff pointed his shotgun at him, yelling like a mad man. I mean, Arvin would have done the same thing if his sister was killed and in a way he had when he killed the Preacher. The sick fuck had deserved to die.Ā
The Sheriff continued speaking, angry and drunk. Wanting so bad to kill the man who killed his sister. So when he finally found his hiding spot, he tried to shoot him wanting the bastard to die, wanting Arvin Russell to die. But sadly, he would not be getting his drunken revenge. The sheriff shot, trying to shoot the young boy only to shoot the fallen tree protecting Arvin and to get shot himself by the German Luger in Arvinās hand.Ā
Arvinās whole body felt shaky after he shot him, he hated the thought that he killed another person, another man. Someone who had family, who had a life unlike the other three he shot and killed. This man was a lawman, and the law would have his head for this. Arvin pulled out a small picture, it was of Sandy Bodecker holding a dead man in her arms. Arvin showed him, so that the Sheriff could see why he had to kill her because if he didnāt, he mightāve of been killed himself. So he sat there as the man died just a few minutes later even though it seemed like hours. Arvin stood up, exhausted and went to grab his Jacket to get ready to take off when he heard his name being shouted by a voice he knew all too well. It was Y/n.Ā
ā Arvin! Arvin Russel! I know yer out here!ā Before Arvin could think, he scrambled behind the fallen tree, hoping sheād go away. He didnāt want to pull her into this, hell heād left a letter for her too. Hoping his GrandmommaĀ would have given it to her. The letter was all about her staying away, but she couldnāt even do that. Arvin knew Y/n was too stubborn to listen when she had her mind set. Y/n never listened to reason when she got her mind set on something else. Which in this place was running after him after he said not to.Ā
ā Arvin please come out! I donāts got a gun on me or anything. I have money and a truck, I even gots some clothes. I want to help yah. That olā sheriff is gonna be here any minute to get yah and I need yah to come with meh.ā Arvin realized that she didnāt know the Sheriff already came, and that he shot him. He felt like shit that he was pulling her into this, that she was in this. This mess that he created.Ā
Arvin knew he couldnāt just sit there, expecting that sheād think he wasnāt there Y/n always knew. Arvin always suspected that she knew him better than she knew himself. He spoke, just wanting so badly for to leave him be so that maybe she could be safe,ā Y/n, I need yah to leave. I uh, Iāve done shit things and I donāt wanna pull yah down with me. Please donāt be stubborn for once in yer life and listen to meh.ā He heard Y/n sigh, which meant she was close.
ā Arvin, I aināt leaving. So get your ass up outta whatever place your hiding in before I make yah.ā He sighed, he knew he wasnāt gonna be able to do anything to make her leave. He stood up slowly, time seemed to slow down as tears filled her eyes upon seeing him, running at him and hugging him tightly. Arvin wrapped his own arms around her and rested his head onto her shoulder.Ā
ā Yah big, dumb, idiot you...ā She said quietly, hugging tightly like he might disappearĀ if she lets go. Arvin sighs, feeling a strange sort of comfort in her arms. It reminded him of the comfort he used to have with mother, when sheād hold him or sing that old songĀ āBessieā. She pulled back before looking down to see the dead body, Sheriff Lee Bodecker.Ā
He heard her sigh,ā Where the Luger?āĀ
Arvin was surprised by how calm she was, seeing a dead body right in front of her. But then again, he knew Y/n. Sheād seen things that even he hadnāt seen and he saw his pet dog being crucified and his Daddy taking his own life with a god damn pocket knife. Arvin looks down at the ground, where he buried his poor dog and his Daddyās gun,ā I buried it.āĀ
ā Good, we donāt need nobody else dying cause yer trigger happy.ā Arvin nods his head, not really having anything to say.Ā
ā āKay, go git into the truck, Iāll be up there soon. I need a few minutes to send a few prayers for the man and such.āĀ
ā Look Y/n, yah donāt have to do thi-ā
ā Go git in the truck Arvin. Weāll talk in a few. Just go git in the truck.ā Arvin sighed, nodding before making his way up the hill to Y/nās old black pickup. He opened the door and sat in the passengers seat. He knew he couldāve probably dipped out on her, tried to push her away so that she doesnāt get involved in this mess. But he knew no matter how hard he tried, she would just pop right back. Because she loved him, it was clear to him now that she loved him the same way he loved her. I mean, what kind of girl would drive all that way to knockemstiff justĀ to pick up a boy she knew murdered several people. Girls in love.
----
Arvin and Y/n sat in silence in the truck. Silence reminded Y/n of her Father. How her and him would sit in his black pickup truck, the same one she now drove in. Theyād drive in complete silence, to a place where he could have his way with her when she was nothing but a child.
Y/n thoughts started to wonder, wondering if that's what the preacher did to Lenora, took her to a place in his car where he could get what he wanted, blinded by his sinful acts. Sheās seen him do it to the Reaster Girl and he once tried to do with her. But she wasnāt stupid enough to get into a car with a man she just met, with a man that reminded her of a man she longed to forget but always stayed ingrained in her brain.Ā
Men like that are always blinded by sin, no matter how much they say they are a man of god, they are just the devil in disguise using god's name to cover up their tracks for what they do. She thought Lenora would've been safe, but that sadly wasn't god's plan. Arvin stared ahead, trying to keep awake as he tried to figure out something to say when Y/n spoke up," I do this cause I care about yah and yer all I have left. I donts got any family no more. At least nobody in coal creak. Your all I gots left.", the girl had started, causing Arvin to wake up a little. And he looked at her, watching as she gripped the steering wheel, so focused on the road but also focused on making Arvin know her reasons for helping him. For a helping a boy who's killed.
"We aren't blood related but we're friends, we're close enough to be family. Lenora was mah friend, but she was mah family. And what that preacher did, he deserved to die. That man reminded me too much of mah Daddy. I knew he was trouble from the start. I could see the way he did things, it was the same type of things mah daddy did. Those type of men, they always have a pattern. Mah Daddy did, and so did the preacher."
Y/n didn't speak of her father often, sometimes it was too painful to talk about. About the things he did to her and her mother. He'd beat them, and he'd use them in more ways than one. Using them to show off to the world what a man of god he was as the Father of a small Church. Or to use them as servants for his house to be picture perfect, not a thing out of place or there would be a price to pay. Or, he'd use them in the most sinful way of all, through lustful acts. And not just his wife, but his daughter too. Lenora had saved her most times, sneaking her into her home late at night or sometimes in early morning or during the day. And Y/n helped her with the boys at school, trying to get them to leave Lenora alone. It never worked, both Lenora trying to keep Y/n away from her Daddy and Y/n trying to keep Lenora away from the horrid boys at school. But they both tried, and for just that Y/n saw Lenora as family and Lenora saw her as family too.Ā Ā
" Lenora didnāt deserve what happened to her. She was such a bright girl, she my best friend. She always helped, no matter if it was gonna hurt her in the end. She always helped.ā Y/n paused, a small memory forming in her head and then into words.
ā Remember how Lenora used to hide me from mah Daddy? She'd sneak me in the window and yah'd hear it and come running to tell us to shut up before we woke up Grandmomma. Then youād proceed to act like yah didnāt want me there, only throw one of yer shirts at me telling me it wouldnāt be the greatest thing for meh sleep in mah day clothes,ā Y/n spoke, a small smile and chuckle leaving her, Arvin watched it. Watched how a memory with not good things embedded into it made her smile. Arvin never understood how Y/n could get so happy just by a single memory. Even memories that werenāt the greatest. Arvin thought it was probably because she didnāt have many good memories, only a few but they always had some type of her hurt in them but she still cherished them as much as she could. Mostly, all memories she had was her trying to save herself and her depressed mother from her Daddy, so not too many were happy. And because ofĀ all those no good memories, Arvin rarely ever did see her smile like that, smile with really happiness and not just something phony so no one will worry about her. But Arvin knew, he always did.Ā
He hears her sigh," I wished she would've recognized the signs of a man like that. Of a man like mah father, she knew āim, we both pledged to stay away from men like that. But sadly, they always tend to get us one way or another. No matter what their relation is to yah, they always get yah." She pauses, thinking about Lenora for a minute, thinking about how she didnāt deserve that kind of abuse, about how she didnāt deserve to die, to kill herself.
ā What Iām trying to say, is who yah killed, they deserved to die, not the other way around. And thats why Iām helping yah, because yah donāt deserve whateverā punishment the lawās gonna inflict on yah. You were Lenoraās brother and in a way she was my sister. So Iām looking out for yah, for her.āĀ
Arvin looked down at his hands, the same ones that held a gun, his Daddyās gun,ā But arenāt I like those men, arenāt I turning into them? Iāve killed, Y/n. Not just the preacher. Iāve killed another man and a women, Iāve killed the Sheriff.ā
ā And why did you kill āem?ā
ā They were gonna kill me. T-the man had a gun, so did his wife. I shot āim before he could shoot me and I shot his wife too. I had begged her to put down the gun. B-but she wouldnāt. And the Sheriff, he was gonna kill me cause the wife was his sister. ā
ā See, yah only killed to get rid of the horrible people who only intend to hurt yah. Yah killed with reason, not just cause yah were blinded by sin. And that Sheriff, sure he was a lawman, but he was a bad one. He deserved it as much as his sister. So no, yah arenāt likeĀ āem. Thatās why I love yah, stupid. Because yah arenāt like them.ā Arvin looked at her, all she did was stare straight ahead, focusing on the road. Arvin knew she had hard times with saying love. Even just saying love to people who were just family or friends. Love scared her, he knew that. It scared him too. Love to kids like them was a scary thing, because it didnāt come often and when it did it was ripped away from them. Slowly Arvin put his hand on her leg, to give her at least some sort of comfort, some sort of touch and maybe he needed the touch as much as she did too.Ā
ā I love yah too, yah know.ā He said as he looked out the window.
ā I know.āĀ Ā
-----
ā Put these on.ā Y/n spoke throwing a black t-shirt and Jeans at him, the clothes landing on his head.
ā Why?ā
ā Cause, they already know what yer wearing. If yah wear something different itāll be harder to find yah, plus itāll be better for yah to wear somethinā cleaner.ā Arvin sighed grabbing the clothes Y/n threw at him.
ā Also, I got somethinā for yah. Here.ā She then throws a pack of cigarettes at him. The pack hitting him square in the face making Y/n laugh.Ā
ā Yah know, yah could always just hand me the stuff instead of throwing it at me.ā
ā Well where would the fun be in that?ā Y/n said with a smirk and wiggling her eyebrows in a goofy way. It was dark out and Arvin sat in the open back of the truck while Y/n threw stuff at him that sheād packed. Arvin was surprised about how prepared she was. She packed all the necessitates. Like blankets and clothing, even food and water and even money. Arvin was grateful and lucky Y/n came after him, he wouldāve been completely lost without her.Ā
ā Now git dressed. Iāll look away, donāt yah worry.ā Then made a show of slowly turning around and putting her hands over her eyes. It made Arvin chuckle, he liked when he saw Y/n like this, all goofy and just plain smiles. It reminded him of Lenora, it reminded him of his mother.Ā
ā So where did yah get these clothes anyway? They look like mine.ā
ā Yeah, I raided yer drawers. Grandmomma helped me too.ā
ā She knew yah were going after me?ā
ā Yeah, she does. She wanted me to find yah and to make sure yer safe. She said Iād be the only one to keep yer ass in line out here.ā There was a moment of silence between the two.
ā Iām done getting dressed.ā
ā Finally, I need some well deserved sleep and you are taking up our bed for the night. Weāll find something better tomorrow though.ā Y/n hopped on the makeshift bed with all the blankets she had piled onto one another to make it more comfortable than it was on the back of the pickup truck. She laid down and looked up at the sky, a small smile on her face.Ā
ā Yah arenāt gonna change either?ā
ā Oh, uh I uh, I forgot to bring a change of clothes. I was so focused on getting shit for yah and finding yah. I forgot some clothes for myself. But itās fine.ā
ā No it aināt. Here, wear one of my shirts yah brought, I bet wearing that dress isnāt too comfortable.ā Y/n raised an eyebrow at him.Ā
ā Is this just yer way of getting me to wear yer clothes. Cause yah could always ask.āĀ
ā Oh shut up and put on the clothes.ā Arvin said with a little red starting to creep up on his cheeks, he was thankful it was dark out so she couldnāt see. Y/n laughed as she grabbed one of Arvinās shirts, it was his white button up church shirt. Y/n had always wanted to try it on, it seemed comfy to Y/n, and it was. When Arvin could finally look, his eyes wanted to pop out of his skull, and in a way they were. There she was, in just undergarments and his white button-up. Arvin always hated that shirt but right then, he loved it.Ā
ā Alrighty, now itās time for sleep. We got a lot of driving to do tomorrow cause we are going all the way toĀ Cincinnati.ā
ā Whatās in Cincinnati?ā Arvin asked as Y/n climbed in the back and laid down.Ā
ā My Uncle lives out there. I gave him a call at one of the phones while you slept in the Truck. Heās gonna keep us for awhile, heās got an extra room and heās gonna let us stay until we are able to leave and make a life for ourselves without the cops coming after yah.ā She laid down looking up at the sky as she spoke. She never saw her uncle anymore, the man used to live with her and her parents when she was young. But one fateful day at age 10 he moved to Cincinnati and never really kept in contact. Y/n knew his number, always wanted to call him. There were multiple times where she wanted to call and beg him to take her away from her small house in Coal Creak. But she never did. When she called, the man was ecstatic when he heard her voice. He offered her to stay with him before she could even ask. It made her wonder how a man who obviously wanted her to be in his life never kept contact for many years of her life. But she already knew it was probably cause of her Daddy. The man never liked how his brother looked at her Mama and how she looked at him. How he seemed to act like more of a father to Y/n then her own was.Ā
ā You have an Uncle?ā, Arvin asked popping Y/n out of her thoughts as he propped up on his elbow so he could look at her. As he looked at her, he started thinking about how beautiful she was. Even in the dark and with the dirt and the few stray leaves in her hair and even wearing his horrid old church shirt. He still thought she was just plain beautiful.Ā
ā Yeah I do, he used to live with me when I was younger. Heās a good man.ā
ā And does he know what I did?ā Arvin asked nervously.
ā I told him, he said it wouldnāt be any different if yah were in the war. Donāt worry, we gonna have a place to go. Yer gonna be okay. Weāre gonna be okay. I got it handled,ā Arvin couldn't explain how he felt in that moment, as he stared at her, knowing how Y/n was always there. Even when they were just kids and he was just plain lonely and to now where she's helping him get away from the law after killing. But all he knew, in that moment, was that he loved her and he wanted to tell her in the best possible way. Love to kids like him and her was a rare thing, so he decided he was gonna act on it. So he kissed her.Ā
From his propped up position he was able to swoop down and touch his lips to hers as she laid there looking up at the stars. Y/n was surprised at first, not knowing what was happening when realization hit her. Arvin Russell, her best friend growing up, the boy she loved was kissing her. So she kissed him back. Their positions changed through the kiss. Y/n now straddled his lap and her arms circled around his neck, one hand running through the back of his hair. Arvin sat below her, one hand on her hip and the other grasping the side of her face gently. Both putting all their love and passion for one another into that one kiss. They both finally pull away, both of their lips being swollen but big smiles on both of their faces, even Arvin who rarely showed smiles. But that just made Y/n appreciate them that much more.
ā Arvin...,ā Y/n started, looking at him with so much love.
ā I love youā Y/n. And not just as a friend or any of that shit. I love yah, I love you as someone I want by me like my Daddy wanted my Mama.ā Y/n looks at him as if he just moved the moon.Ā
ā I love yah too. Always have, always will,ā She speaks, with lovey, dovey tone to her voice before leaning down and kissing him again. Both got aroused fast from their positions and soon they both had one of the best nights of their lives. The lost of both of their innocents. Both of them were each others first and will also be their last.Ā Ā Ā
-----
It was sunrise when Arvin woke up, Y/n laid upon his very shirtless chest as her naked body stayed hidden under the blankets. The memories of what happened last night circles around in his brain, making him smile. He and Y/n had both lost their innocence last night in the back of her Black pickup truck. Arvin couldnāt remember a time of being so happy and feeling so loved like he was last night. Both knew it was a sin in godās eyes, but they both hoped heād forgive them since even though it was before marriage, they were still in love and in their eyes its not any different.
Ā Arvin looked down at her, entranced by how beautiful she looked, how pure she looked just sleeping all sprawled out on his chest, her hair all messy and a light pink dashed across her cheeks from the cold. He sighed, wishing this type of peace could last forever. That the two could just stay like that in the middle of the woods in the back of the truck just enjoying one anotherās company. But he knew thats not how life always worked.Ā
Y/n started to stir, her eyes starting to slowly open as she let out a small yawn. Her nose scrunched up as she yawn, it reminded Arvin of a small Kitten. She was his little kitten.Ā
ā Morninā,ā Arvin spoke in his deep southern voice as he looked at her. She looked up at him, a small smile gracing her face.Ā
ā Good Morninā, so yah ready to take off for Cincinnati with meh? You know you aināt getting rid of me now?ā Arvin smiled, swooping down to give her a gentle and soft kiss the lips before pulling away.Ā
ā And I wouldnāt change it for the life of me, Darlinā.āĀ

Heart | Five Hargreeves
M A S T E R L I S T TUA Masterlist
angst/fluff requests info
yes I know this wasnāt requested but I have so many requests I just wanted to write my own thing. Working on one of the Diego smuts, expect that tomorrow. Also if you guys have any other comments/concerns about the Five discussion we had today, feel free to send me a message here.Ā
At the time, he really thought he made the right choice. Logically it made sense, he had people after him. The Handler, plus 3 very large Swedish men. It wasnāt safe, you werenāt safe. So he broke up with you, and he didnāt even explain why. He couldnāt, you werenāt from his time and you belonged here in 1963. If he were to tell you the truth about who he was, where he was from, or rather when he was from- you wouldnāt hesitate to join him. According to you, there was nothing in Dallas for you, but he didnāt think that was true. You had more here than you thought, you had a chance to have a normal life. To find someone who you could actually be with, being with him is damning yourself to a life of running. You would be damning yourself to an early death, or a life of heartbreak if someone manages to kill him. Thatās only a few of the concerns he has.Ā
What if you get stranded somewhere in time? Without him? Anything could happen to you, and if you were to get stranded, The Commission would most definitely come after you. You would have trained assassins after you, and you would be by yourself. The thought makes him nauseous.Ā
What if you died? If he had to watch you die right in front of him, heād probably lose his mind. He wouldnāt hesitate to rip another hole in time to go back and save you, which would probably cause an entire domino effect of problems to ensue afterwords. Possibly another doomsday.Ā
Letting you go was the logical option. It made sense, it would avoid all of the things he was worried about. It should have been a simple choice, but it wasnāt. He tormented himself for days about it, both before he broke up with you and after. Did he do the right thing? It removes so many problems, but then why does he feel so damn bad? Why does his chest tighten when he thinks about you? Why do tears push at the backs of his eyes if someone says your name? Why canāt he sleep without you laying next to him? What is happening?Ā
There was a lot of coffee consumption in the days after he broke both yours and his heart. The bed was too cold, too big, and too empty. He spent most of the evenings tossing and turning, and those were precious hours wasted if he wasnāt going to sleep. So he didnāt, he slammed a quadruple espresso and forged on through the day. There was work to be done, and even though the fate of everything rested on his shoulders yet again- Five couldnāt concentrate. His hand hovered over the chalkboard, his mind drawing blanks. What was he even working on again? The numbers written before him looked unfamiliar, shit. Running a nervous hand through his hair, his throat closed as he remembered you tugging at his hair on the back of his head when you wanted a kiss. You always said he was anĀ āold soulā, you hit the nail on the head you just didnāt know it.Ā
Five wasnāt the tallest person around, but you were positively tiny. Compared to you, Five may as well have been average sized. You stood a few inches shorter than him and your small, delicate hand fit with his so perfectly. One of Fiveās hands was slid in his pocket but his right hand hung loosely at his side as he read over the chalkboard once more. He didnāt know what to do with his right hand anymore, thatās the hand you always held. And squeezed whenever you noticed the stressed expression cross onto his face- which was quite often. He didnāt know then how badly he would miss your little hand squeezes. Five throws the chalk across the room before he spacial jumps to the roof, he needs air.Ā
This entire thing was his fault, he knew he shouldnāt involve himself with anybody. He knew how it would end, he knew it wouldnāt last, that it couldnāt last. Five knew he would have to leave, and attaching himself to somebody else was just unnecessary pain. He knew it was doomed to fail, destined to end the very second he laid eyes on you. Wiping down tables at that damn diner Klaus got thrown out of, your hair in a ponytail and a bright smile on your face. He knew he would have to do this. Five told himself to keep walking, even when he turned his head and saw some kid flirting with you. He told himself to let it go, that he couldnāt care about anybody. He had come to a halt, his palms twitching as he watched you smile at the boy sitting at the breakfast bar. Why would someone as gorgeous as you be giving that scumbag the time of day? Heās obviously staring at your cleavage. The annoyance grew when he saw you scribbling something down on a napkin. Why are you still giving him your attention?Ā
The second your eyes met his through the window, Five knew he was done for.Ā
The two of you were inseparable since that day. Five had stormed inside the diner, embarrassed the poor kid by revealing how much smarter Five was. At the same time, Five was impressing you with his intelligence and making you laugh with his witty comebacks. Maybe you thought that other kid was cute for a second, but the minute you saw Five strolling up to the bar, with a tense smile on his face, your heart belonged to him. The poor kid ended up scrambling away with heated cheeks, and the napkin youād written your address on was slid over to Five. The next 10 minutes were spent chatting, and when you saw the way his eyes lit up when he talked about his brothers and sisters, you knew that you had to have him. The heavy remorse in his tone when he spoke of his brother Ben had you reaching across the bar to take his hand in yours.Ā
Five knew your relationship would be challenging, given who he was. He really tried to talk himself out of it, but eventually he found himself on your porch, in the pouring rain, with his lips pressed to yours. How cliche. He was a goner from the second he met you, and he loved it. When the days ticked away and it drew closer to the upcoming end of the world, Five knew it was time to do the thing he never wanted to do. He needed to let you go. He cared for you in a way heād never cared for anybody, the emotions stirring in his stomach were so intense, and strong, and complicated, he almost didnāt have a word for it. He doesnāt understand it, and frankly, that scares him.Ā
Five had shifted from foot to foot on your porch, his heart beating like wild in his chest. He dreaded this, he really did but he needed to do this. He was doing it for you after all. When you answered the door, the sight of you took his breath away. You were just so damn beautiful, why do you have to make this so hard on him? You had leaned up to kiss him, but Five turned his head and your lips landed on his cheek. If he felt his lips against yours, heād lose the nerve to do this. This needs to be done.Ā āWhatās wrong?ā There was so much concern in your voice, you must have seen the distressed look on his face. Five couldnāt bare to look in your eyes, so he kept his gaze pointed straight ahead. He was a trained assassin for God sakes, he was trained not to give a shit about other people. So why was this so hard?Ā āI canāt see you anymore.ā Five says dismissively, trying to make it appear as though itās not a big deal to him. You froze, all the air having been pulled from your lungs the second the words left his lips. It knocked the wind out of you.Ā
āWhy?ā Your heart was broken into tiny pieces, and you tried to be strong because clearly this didnāt bother him. Did Five ever really care about you? You thought he did, but right now youāre not so sure he ever did. If he cared about you then how could he be so casual about this? So unaffected?Ā āYou wouldnāt understand Y/N, I just canāt.ā His answer is vague, but you wanted more. No, you needed more of an explanation than that. He doesnāt get to break your heart and walk away with it without giving a decent explanation first.Ā āTell me why Five.ā Your voice is trembling as you desperately try to find somewhere on the door to hold onto. It feels like your entire world has shifted, like itās all fallen out from under you.Ā āIs it because of me?ā Your voice is broken and hearing you immediately blame yourself nearly sends him across the porch to press his lips against yours and whisper how perfect you are. Do you not understand that Five does not deserve you?Ā
But Five shoves his heart back inside his chest and nods curtly,Ā āyeah. Itās because of you.ā The soft cry that escapes your mouth has Five clenching his jaw, if he doesnāt walk away right now heāll take it all back and beg for your forgiveness. Five doesnāt even bother glancing at you as he turns and walks down your porch steps. As soon as you see him heading down the dirt path you collapse to your knees in tears. Five hears your crying get louder and nearly comes to a halt but he pushes himself forward. Heās doing this to protect you, he canāt take you with him. Itās too dangerous. He forces himself to keep walking, to leave you there crying and alone. Five never thought someone like you would ever come into his life, but now that youāre gone, he doesnāt want to live without you.Ā
Allison could tell something was wrong with her brother the second he came up the stairs. A forlorn expression was strewn on his face, and for the last few days heād been gloomy. She watched him head to the back of the apartment, straight towards the bedroom. He didnāt glance at her, no snarky comment, didnāt even glance at the equations on the chalkboard. Allisonās eyebrows furrowed as she turned to face him,Ā āwhatās up with you?ā She asked before he could close the door. Five pauses, he misses you so much itās hard for him to even breathe without you next to him. How he supposed to live the rest of his life feeling this way? He wishes he could just forget you...Allison. Five turns with a solemn look on his face,Ā āI need you to do me a favor.āĀ
Allison crosses her arms and raises a brow,Ā āI need you to help me forget somebody.ā Both of her eyebrows fly up at his request. Looking into his eyes, she can tell that heās serious.Ā āExplain.ā Is the only word Allison can manage through the shock. Five groans with an eye roll but begins to explain anyway.Ā āI met somebody, and I was seeing her for a little while. Seeing as weāre going to be leaving soon, I knew I needed to end it with her. Nothing feels the same, Iām not hungry, I canāt sleep. I canāt think about anything but her, itās like my chest is being crushed with a cinder block every time I even hear her name. I donāt know whatās happening but I want it to stop.ā Five says and Allison has a small smile spread across her face.Ā
āYouāre in love with her Five, thatās why you feel like this.ā Allison says and Fiveās eyes widen. Heās in love with you. Thatās why he canāt function unless youāre next to him.Ā āYou shouldnāt let that go.ā Five squeezes his fists closed upon hearing her statement. As if thatās something he never considered,Ā āyou think I want to? I canāt Allison, I canāt take her with us!ā He snaps and Allison rolls her eyes while placing a hand on her hip. Five tugs anxiously at his hair, turning away from Allison.Ā āMaybe you should just tell her the truth, and let her decide. Loving someone like this doesnāt happen very often, you shouldnāt let her go.ā She says with a shrug before walking past him and right out of the apartment. Five places both palms flat against the table, his heart and his head conflicted.Ā
After a few minutes of tormenting himself, Five stands straight up and nearly runs out the door. His heart is beating wildly in his chest as he sprints the entire way to your house. Allison is right, even if you canāt come with him he needs to tell you the truth. About who he is, about everything. You deserve the truth, and he canāt leave knowing how badly he broke you. He would never forgive himself, and he would spend the rest of his life regretting how he left you without telling you how he feels. Five is panting when he makes it to your house, his hand reaching up to slam against the door. When you swing the door open, his cheeks are red and heās heaving for breath but he smiles upon seeing you. Your heart warms at the sight of him standing on your porch,Ā āI love you-ā are the first words out of his mouth. You freeze, does he really mean that? You stand apprehensively in the doorway, waiting for him to explain.Ā
āI havenāt been truthful with you, and you deserve to know the truth.ā Five says, his hands in his pockets and after a minute or so you sigh before swinging the door open. The two of you sit down on the couch, but you keep your distance from him. Five looks at you with an unreadable expression on his face, and you stay silent, waiting for him to speak first. And he does, he starts at the beginning and tells you everything.Ā

Meant To Be Series || One For Every Billion
6. By My Side | Pt 1
- July 20th -
The park is asĀ close to empty as it can beĀ whenĀ your groupĀ arrives early in the morning. Since you've been staying with the Kageyamas,Ā you drive up with Miwa and Tobio,Ā meeting up with your mutual cousins,Ā Ren and Shin, at the entrance to the park's hotel.
You've all made sure to capitalize on early access passes and are staying overnightĀ to make the most of your time, soĀ everyone dropsĀ off their things first before deciding what to do in the timeĀ youĀ allĀ have before the park opens to all regular pass holders.
The rest of you are just waitingĀ on MiwaĀ toĀ meetĀ you allĀ back in the lobby fromĀ her room (she takes the longest, honestly) andĀ you're pulling on the thigh-length sleeveless cardiganĀ you grabbed to wear overĀ your shorts and tank combo,Ā whenĀ you finally hear her voice as she crosses from the elevator bay to your group by the doors.
"Okay kiddos, I'm off to the adults only section of this place so call me if you need anything. But try not to, you know?"
Well, Miwa is the eldest ofĀ the groupĀ hereĀ andĀ you're sure she only came along because her best friend decided they could make a mini girls' vacation out of it and brought along her own younger siblings as an excuse.
Tobio looks a little frustrated when he replies, "Neesan, it's way to early in the morning to find a bar."
"Are you kidding me? Of course I'm not drinking. Yet. We're just going to the theme spa!" She happily exclaims, waving her hand in the air delicately, "So you know, try not to get lost or get hurt, because I don't want you interrupting some serious r and r."
Ren rolls his eyes at his cousins' interaction, as if he's any better.Ā You're well aware he also already has plans to ditchĀ the rest of your groupĀ when his friends arrive. Thankfully Shin interrupts before Tobio's easy temper is tripped.
"Hey let's hit up the new coaster! I want to see Tobi throw up!"
Okay, not helping. ButĀ you do want to try the new roller coaster, as well,Ā you're a huge fan of any adrenaline inducing activities and there are only so many timesĀ you can try the ones back home beforeĀ you're used to all the dips and twists. This new one is supposed to have the highest drop record internationally so far.
"Tobio youĀ won't throw up, right?"Ā You try to coax him to agreeing, "I think you'll enjoy it!"
He givesĀ you a dry look as if to say, You didn't put any effort into that. SoĀ you shrug and decide to bribe him, "I'll buy you milk after."
He contemplates it for a moment before nodding. Success, as usual.
Miwa claps her hands together in excitement, "Perfect! Okay, so I've givenĀ Y/n the contacts for Eiko's sister and brothers. They're around here somewhere so please take some time to say hi. Tobio already knows Hikaru and Hiroshi so I'm sure you'll all get along great!"
Before any ofĀ you have time to respond, she's bounced off, presumptively towards the waterpark and spa area. Okay then,Ā you turn back toĀ your cousins with a big smile that only Shin returns, making himĀ your favourite of the day.Ā You're all for the deadpan look whenĀ you're bored or annoyed butĀ you're actually so happy to be here,Ā you love amusement parks.
"So... let's hit some coasters?"
"Yeah!" Surely,Ā you can all guess who answers.
After spending about an hour hitting up several ofĀ the most popular rides andĀ possibly traumatizing TobioĀ before the main rush of people arrive in the park,Ā you get a buzz fromĀ your phone, sitting tight againstĀ your waist in an inner zippered pocket ofĀ your cardigan, withĀ your cash and cards. It's really a pain to have to carry bags and even more so to have to stress about having it stolen so, being an avid coaster enthusiast,Ā you like to keepĀ your items simple on days like this.
Quickly moving out and to the side of the exitĀ line to pull outĀ your phone,Ā you see a notification from Hana, the girl who is Miwa's friend's little sister.
, YouĀ look up and findĀ your cousins alsoĀ stopped when you @sakusasimpbot anding right by you. Thank god,Ā you didn't want to have to drag them back here if they'd wandered away to the next ride.
"Hana and her brothers are on this ride so I told her we'd wait for them here."
Ren is typing on his phone but speaks up, "I'm about to head out to meet up with my friends." Finally finished with his own chat, he looks up at the restĀ of you, "Will you guys be okay from here? We can meet back for lunch."
Tobio just shrugs whileĀ you nod, Shin speaking forĀ everyone when he tells his brother, "Yeah, yeah. Just go already, the 'real' adult already ditched us a while back so no need to act all mature here."
"Shut up, Shin." Ren returns his brother's smirk withĀ a glare, which slides back into his expressionless gaze after he rolls his eyes and faces you and Tobio.
"We'll be fine, Ren, we're all in the same place and can call if anything."Ā Your turn to reassure him where Shin clearly failed to even try.
Ren studiesĀ you for a moment before turning and throwing a casual, "..'kay." over his shoulder.Ā You're sureĀ you, Tobio, and Shin all share a mutual eye roll at that.
Shin has pulled up the park map on his phone, looking for a place whereĀ your groupĀ might want to grab a snack or drink, when the next line of people exit the ride.
LinkingĀ your arm with Tobio,Ā you scan for a girl and two guys that look around your age. It's not hard because there really still aren't many people in this area of the park yet and the guys in question make an immediate beeline forĀ the three of youĀ when they lock eyes with Tobio. Right, since they know him already.
Hana is a pretty brunette with a bright smile on her face andĀ you can immediately tell she's a fellow coaster enthusiast, if not adrenaline junkie, because of that wild happy look in her eyes.
Just as theirĀ groupĀ reaches yours,Ā you smile back at her and say, "It's a really good one, right?"
"Yes!" She happily exclaims, "I felt like I was flying off the seat!"
YouĀ laugh at her enthusiasm, "Exactly, completely weightless."
Tobio introducesĀ you and ShinĀ toĀ Hiroshi and Hikaru, who immediately tellĀ you bothĀ to just call them Hiro and Karu. The two brothers have a relaxed vibe to them as well and,Ā you swear, Karu and Shin click instantly. Not surprising, since they have a very similar outgoing and playful vibe, althoughĀ you can attest from personal experience that Shin is probably the more mischievous and troublesome one. Karu has more of a happy and fun feel, ifĀ you're reading him correctly.
Hiro is equally nice and outgoing, with a slightly more chill personality that offsets Tobio's quiet intensity pretty well.
Hana isĀ amazing andĀ your first impression of her is only improved asĀ youĀ allĀ sit down and talk over refreshing drinks at an outdoor cafĆ©. She remindsĀ you a lot of one ofĀ your friends back home, Aspen, in that down to earth and cheery kind of way soĀ you immediately feel a sense of familiarity with her.
YouĀ find out that the siblings are each about a year apart, which coincidentally lines them up with Shin, you, and Tobio respectively.Ā You had a feeling Miwa and her friend wereĀ pushingĀ all of youĀ to hang out here together for a reason.Ā You definitely think she wanted her brother to spend time with a friend, especially after how tough things had been for him at school and with his club lately.
YouĀ look over at him when Hana briefly interjects into his and Hiro's conversation, completely relaxed for now with a bottle of cold milk in his hands. Yeah. He catchesĀ you looking and blinks in surprising, honestly shockingĀ you when he returnsĀ your smile to him with a very small one of his own.Ā You haven't seen him smile for quite a while, at least not the past several weeks you've been staying with his family. Probably not since the last timeĀ you saw him about a year and a half ago.
Oh, Tobio,Ā you think asĀ you look away to study the people passing by, I hope you're okay. He was always serious and direct, even as a little kid, but he never hesitated to smile when he felt happy. Does that mean he hasn't felt happy lately? For how long?
YouĀ have to shelf your concern away soĀ you don't dampen the mood of this trip for everyone. Looking back to the others to make sure they're all finished up,Ā you ask, "What do we want to do next?"
"None of us have triedĀ these onesĀ across the park," Shin speaks up, "So maybe make a circle this way back around?"
YouĀ catch Hana'sĀ disappointed expressionĀ just before she wipes it away and says, "I was hoping to try the new one, it's supposed to be exhilarating!"
"They already went on it, Hana." Karu gently replies butĀ you shakeĀ your head and say, "Sure, but I loved it. I'd be really happy to go again!"
"Really?"
"Yeah! Why don't we split up? If the guys actually start from the other side of the circuit they planned, we should catch up to them in no time and group back up."
Karu and Hiro exchange looks and shrug, Karu stating, "I'm okay with that if you guys stick together and message us updates so we know you're safe and also don't miss each other as the park fills up more." He looks to yourĀ cousins and asks, "What about you guys? What do you think?"
Tobio's still looking at whereĀ you pointed outĀ your plan of action on the map displayed from Shin's phone but it's really Shin whoĀ you have to make sure agrees. After all, Tobio is younger thanĀ you by a year, but Shin is older thanĀ you by that same length. Even though it's never somethingĀ you think any ofĀ you typically consider,Ā you rememberĀ the little incident last summerĀ where he got chewed out by Ren and hope he's not decided to be a little more strict with you.
YouĀ catch him looking atĀ you with a sardonic gleam in his eye and realize both your thoughts are probably very aligned. If he does decide to vetoĀ your idea, it won't be because he believes he needs to be strict, it'll be purely out of his innate need to torment you. Ugh.
"Okay," What? Ahh, nowĀ you're even more suspicious but it sounds like he's acceptingĀ your plan, "keep the sound on your phone high though, and call immediately if there's an emergency."
Yeah, sure, at this pointĀ you have a line of people who've toldĀ you to call them right away but if he hasn't considered that,Ā you're not saying it.
So instead,Ā you brightly agree, "Of course!" earning a doubtful look from him.
Oh well.Ā You reach for Hana but she's already grabbingĀ your hand instead andĀ you both rush away to the new ride calling over your shoulder, "See you later!"
YouĀ bothĀ ignore whatever they call out after the two of you, giggling andĀ debatingĀ whereĀ you want to sit on the ride instead.
"Y/n!"Ā You hear a familiar voice call outĀ your name in excitement justĀ asĀ you bothĀ reach the line up for the first ride andĀ you feel butterflies take flight inĀ your stomach, spreading electric tingles throughĀ you with the flutter of their delicate wings. Wow. Well,Ā you know even beforeĀ you turn around who it's going to be.

Behind The Scenes!
-Y/n and Toru can really dance around the things they really want to talk about, even when some things are called out directly by both...
-Y/n doesn't always catch herself calling him 'Toru' out loud (or over text even), clearly that's what she calls him in her head <3 but she usually is aware of what name she's using when she speaks it out loud, or she just avoids calling him directly at all
-But much like when she says 'I'm sorry Toru' in that 4th panel, it happens... she didn't realize it, it was just a heartfelt apology that she was trying to genuinely express
-She won't say she wasn't expecting him to ask to spend his birthday with her, even if they've messaged constantly for the past year
-Which is why she felt so bad when he reached out about it early in the month... and why she wasn't focused on how she addressed him... but then calls him Oikawa in the next panel
-He notices all the slips, whether he teases comments or not
-Tobio and roller coasters... :'D
A/N: Hmm, I wonder who this new person could be... lmao, hope you guys have liked part one so far, the ride only gets wilder from here ;)

Santaās Little Helpers
Fandom: Newsies
Word Count: 2k+
Characters: Racetrack Higgins, Albert DaSilva, Jack Kelly, Katherine Plumber, Smalls (Newsies)
Summary: When Albert had told Race that heād had a surprise for him at the mall, this is not what Race had had in mind.
A/N: So this little fic was a request from Katrina Miller. This reviewer did ask for a Christmas fic with Race and Albert and while that's definitely here, this did turn into a bit of a Sprace fic. I hope that's okay!
Please enjoy!
When Albert had told Race he'd had a surprise for him down at the mall, this is not exactly what Race had had in mind.
Race was now making minimum wage at, what he had been told by Saint Nick himself, was the perfect job for him. He was an elf. If the pointy ears and ridiculous jingle bell hat weren't enough, the shoes certainly completed the outfit. He was clad up in ridiculous green and white socks and even worse tiny red overalls. What didn't make sense to Race was that he had never been particularly short. Neither had Albert. And yet, here they were, pretending they were tiny, had squeaky little voices and painting red little red circles on their noses and cheeks.
Currently, Santa's was on a ten and that meant that Santa's helpers had to deal with the oh-so understanding parents and their screaming kids who had been waiting in line for about two hours now only for Santa to decide he needed a break.
"Oh my gosh, look at him," Race groaned a bit at the voice, turning around to be met with the sight of his all too adorning big brother who was not even alone. No, he had his girlfriend on his arm. "Honey, look at our little elf! They grow up so fast."
The pair had bags and bags of things in their arms. And Race couldn't even be bothered to be the nosy kid he was and try to prematurely snoop. All he could do was glare as Katherine cooed at him, "Aww, we raised a good little elf, Jackie."
With a roll of his eyes, Race just prayed no one else he knew from school stumbled through Santa's Village. As much of a loser as he already was, he didn't think he'd survive the torment. Albert, however, didn't seem to care as he slung an arm around Race's shoulders and hung on him a bit. Albert was eccentric. People expected this kind of thing from him. Race, as he often was, was just along for the ride. Right now, that ride required red, white and green everything and a fake smile for the bratty kids that tugged on his hair and ears.
"Heya, Jack!" Albert grinned. Race pouted his lips over his brother, as though he was asking for some kind of help but Jack only reached into his back pocket and took out his phone, snapping a picture of the pair. Albert was grinning.
Not quite as ecstatic to be here, Race's pout turned into a small glare towards the man who raised him. "Have I ever told you that I hate you?" he asked, only getting a small laugh out of Jack. "I'm burning all of your presents."
Jack only smiled and shrugged. "Well, I guess that means I can go return all of thisā"
With his eyes widened in fake terror Race shook his head. "No! Jackie!" he whined. "I want presentsā¦"
"Then I guess you gotta be a good little elf and take all the kiddies to meet Santa," Jack shrugged. Then he smirked. He had such a knowing smirk and Race hated him and yet somehow still loved him for it.
Before he could further insult his big brother in front of the giant line of crabby customers, Katherine was quick to press a quick kiss to his cheek. "We'll be by later to give you guys a ride, okay?" he promised, moving to give a waiting Albert a kiss on the head. "Tinker away my little elves."
"Bye, Red!" Albert called.
"Bye, Red!" Katherine called back, walking away confidently without her boyfriend.
Jack paused to give Race a kiss on the head too. "Be good, okay? Give these kids a good meeting with Santa. You don't know how many of them might actually need it." That was just like Jack. Thinking about others first. Sometimes Race feared that it might be Jack's downfall. He cared too much about others. He was self sacrificing. He couldn't could the number of times Jack had literally given him the shirt off of his back and the food that never reached his mouth. They'd grown up poor. They'd grown up orphans.
But that was a long time ago.
Race was sixteen now. And he had a job like any normal sixteen year old does at Christmas time.
Turning back to Albert, he sighed. "Why did you make me do this?" It was true. If anyone from school saw him here, he'd be torn apart. He and Albert weren't exactly super popular and they had accepted that a long time ago. That didn't mean no one knew who they were. In fact, people knew them as geeks and/or nerds who were constantly the target of some popular kids' pranks.
With a cheeky grin, all Albert could do was shrug. It was impossible to make the redhead embarrassed at this point. Race figured they'd been through enough humiliation to get him immune. See, Albert had not only one, but two older brothers. They were a product of his father's first marriage and were much older than Albert by the fault. They had been tormenting him his whole life. Race loved Albert's older brothers but they had always had sneaky, effective ways of embarrassing their baby brother. "Um, I'm sorry, we spread Christmas cheer to every child in the world. We're basically like the most important people in the world right now. Our job is literally to make Christmas happen. God knows Santa just sits on his ass all year long while we do all the heavy lifting," Albert scoffed, almost looking offended. "And alsoā¦ moneyā¦" he finished, like that part was some great bonus.
To be honest, Albert wasn't wrong. The money was a great thing and Race was glad to have a little cash in his pocket for the holidays. He still had plenty of Christmas shopping to do. "Whateverā¦" he scoffed, rolling his eyes as they saw Santa coming back. The guy wasn't the best, but he got the job done.
"You're the one who said you wanted a job, man," Albert said.
"I meant a normal job, Al," Race groaned dramatically as he forced himself to make his way over to that big red rope that blocked off their little area. "One where I don't gotta wear a costume." Albert just tugged on Race's hair. Race let out a small yelp but he got back to work, shooting a glare in his best friend's direction as he let the first child in line go through. He only got shoved a little bit by the mother who had only yelled at him the second Santa walked away.
Today was the seventh day Race had been working and that meant, coincidentally, that he was also getting his first paycheck today and that was something to be happy about. It was all he could think about at the moment, as he lifted screaming, kicking, smelly children on and off of Santa's lap while a bored photographer snapped their picture. Well that and, of course, lunch.
Well, sort of.
As hungry as Race was, and Race was really hungry, the idea of having to stand out in the cafeteria like this was enough to make him want to put a bag over his head. According to his manager, he was not allowed to take off the costume at any time. It would ruin the magic, apparently and that just meant they wanted to see what happened when they sent two teenage boys dressed as elves out into the most popular hang out in the city just to see what would happen.
There were literally twenty minutes left before Race and Albert could take an hour long lunch and that's when Race saw him. "Hi, are you guys ready ta meet Santaā" He froze when he looked up to see a very hot, very muscular boy standing above him. "Holy shā" A hand clamped tightly down over his mouth before the word slipped out and he nearly bit it to get it off.
Spot Conlon was one of the most popular kids at their school. He was the athlete. The quarterback, captain of the soccer team, pitcher of the baseball team and the literal homecoming king was standing right there in front of him and Race was staring at him with wide eyes. "Hi, Spot Conlon," Albert greeted much too cheerfully. Race was sure it had nothing to do with the fact that he was the only person in the world that knew that Race had a huge crush on the older boy and had ever since the sixth grade.
Spot gave the both of them an odd look. "Uhā¦ hi? Do I know you guys?" he asked. It was only then that Race noticed he was holding onto a little girl's hand. He didn't know that Spot had any siblings.
Easily, Albert pulled Race up and put his arm around him again. "Uhā¦ we go ta the same schoolā¦ I've been in your bio class for the past semester, you live in the same building as Raceā"
"Oh you guys are the ones that had to run through the school in your underwear because the Delanceys stole your clothes!" Spot said, like it should've been obvious.
It was immediate, the way Race's face fell into his hands dramatically. Albert hardly reacted. "Yep." Race wished the earth would open up and swallow him whole. That had been one of the single worst days of his life and he loved to have that reminder right now by this boy with this random kid there too. "Anyway, is your sister ready ta meet Santa?"
Snapping back to the moment, Spot looked down at the little girl who seemed very interested in her little toes right then. "Oh, this is actually my niece. Her name's Saraya but we all call her Smalls," he explained. There was still another kid up on Santa's lap giving him a list about the size of himself. "She really wanted to meet Santa, but she's deaf soā¦ h-he doesn't have to talk to her or anything, she just wanted to say hi."
So maybe Race was desperate to impress this boy somehow, but he actually got very excited at hearing that. He immediately looked up before he kneeled back down to that little girl's level. He lifted up his hands slowly. "Hi," he signed with a small smile. "My name's Tyler. Are you excited to see Santa?"
The little girl's face lighting up tuned out the voice of his best friend looking up at Spot and spilling his life story. "His brother is hard of hearing. They were in a really bad car accident when they were little so now he has to wear hearing aids but they couldn't afford them when they were little soā¦" Albert never knew when to stop talking.
It was true. Jack had lost his hearing almost completely when he was ten years old. It hadn't been an easy adjustment for either of them, especially since they were orphaned in the very same crash. Jack hadn't handled it well. So Race had helped him learn a language that he didn't have to hear and now here he was.
They'd both lived.
Saraya nodded to him and signed back, "I know that's not the real Santa, but my uncle says he's gonna tell the real Santa my wish!"
With a big smile, Race nodded right back. "It's true! Santa just so happens to be a personal friend of mine," he explained a bit smugly, his heart only warming when that grin on Smalls's face grew. "What are you gonna ask for?"
That's when Spot stopped her, picking her up to mask that fact. He placed her on his hip before looking down at Race who slowly stood to his feet. "Sheā¦ uhā¦ she wants to see her momā¦ I'm trying to get her to ask for something else, butā¦ her ma ain't home becauseā¦ well she just ain't, butā¦ we're hopin' ta get her home by Christmas. We just need enough to get a plane ticket," Spot shrugged, clearly not up for explaining at the moment.
Something sunk in Race's chest. He nodded, glancing back and realizing that it was Saraya's turn. "Uh, it's her turnā¦" Race stated awkwardly. So Spot nodded and walked over to Santa, setting Saraya down on his lap and translating for her as she sighed and signing back what Santa said.
"You are so in love with him," Albert sighed.
Race elbowed his friend in the gut and turned to him. "I'm not evenā¦ I'm thinkin' about Saraya! She justā¦ I don't knowā¦ reminds me of Jack, okay?" he shrugged. "Except she's not quite as sad as he was whenā¦" Race shook his head.
"Okay, don't go gettin' all emotional. Just get her a gift 'r somethin'."
Race smiled at that.
So that's exactly what they did.
This is how Race ended up on Albert's back, still clad up in annoying green and red colors as they quickly went from store to store trying to find the right thing during their lunch break.
"And then Kat said, 'well, if you admit that you don't believe in Santa, then maybe he'll stop comin' around, so likeā¦ I'm sixteen and I still get presents from Santa and I call that a win," Race shrugged, resting his chin on Albert's shoulder.
Albert scoffed. "Jeanne is the reason Santa still comes around ta our houseā she misses you, by the way," he stated. "She's honestly, the cutest little kid I've ever met."
With a small laugh, Race jumped off of his friend's back and bounced over to the little stuffed animals. They were, of course, in the Disney store. He didn't know where else one would go to get a gift for a child. "Of course she misses me, I'm her favorite," he said, like it should've been obvious.
He came face to face with a little Stitch plushie. His heart swelled. It was one similar to something a nurse had gotten Jack all those years ago when Jack was in the hospital. Race shook himself out of it as he pulled the thing off the shelf. "This is the one," he decided.
"Ohana means family or whatever," Albert shrugged. "It's cute. Get it."
When they got back to Santa's Village, they stole some wrapping paper off of one of the decorations to wrap the gift. Race mostly swatted away Albert's hand when he tried to put a piece down all of the place. Race prided himself in his gift wrapping skills. "Dude, if you're using more than three pieces of tape, you've done something wrong!" he laughed as Albert hung a piece of tape from his nose.
But eventually, they managed to have a gift to give to the little girl who missed her mother.
Race got so wrapped up in the thought as he and Albert continued on that he didn't even notice the Delanceys walk by and mock them. He was too busy trying to give the kids a nice visit with Santa Claus. Some of them might actually need it.
ā
When someone knocked on Spot Conlon's door later that night, he didn't know what to expect. The little elf boy definitely wasn't it. So, maybe he knew what the kid's name was. Racer. That didn't mean he was supposed to care.
Race wasn't wearing his costume anymore. He only wore the makeup. "Uhā¦ hiā¦" he said. Spot almost greeted him back before the kid kept talking. "Look, I know it ain't like we're friends and you can make fun of me forever butā¦ Iā¦ I got Saraya this andā¦ this is for you guysā¦" He handed Spot a neatly wrapped box for Saraya and an envelope. It was his paycheck.
With a curious look, Spot smiled a little bit. "Umā¦ thank you," he shrugged, not really knowing what to say. "You really didn't have toā"
"Saraya should be able to see her mom on Christmasā¦" Race shrugged.
Spot squinted at him a bit. "Whatā"
"Also, just to put this out there, I don't always look like this," he said.
A sly smirk made its way onto Spot's face as he shrugged. "Too bad. You make a cute elf."
Doing his best not to go weak in the knees, Race smiled breathily and let out a small, delighted laugh. "Uh, anywaysā"
"Hey, what the Delanceys did," Spot interrupted, scratching awkwardly at the back of his neck. "That was messed up. I'm sorry I didn't say anything."
For some reason, that might've been the best thing Spot had ever said to him. Okay so maybe this was the first conversation they were really having all alone, but still. "Well, since it's the season of forgiving an' allā¦" Race shrugged. Then he sighed. "Merry Christmas, Spot."
Spot smiled at him. "Merry Christmas, Racerā¦ and heyā¦ thank youā¦"
And with that, Race walked away, feeling the Christmas spirit flowing through him more than he had in years.
Merry Christmas everybody! Happy holidays! Much love!

Apocalypse Kings - Two Preview Chapters
HarperCollins just released a new preview for Apocalypse Kings. Itās slightly longer than the earlier preview released by World Book Day, and elaborates on what the āthree ancient godsā mentioned in the summary are. Also, a chapter count for the whole book. Under the cut.
1.
Adedayo was fourteen when he discovered that he was magic.
Up until then, heād lived what he reckoned to be a normal life. He was on the school football team, which he enjoyed. He was on the school debating team, which he didnāt. He had his family, he had his friends, he liked dogs but was wary of cats, he didnāt like spiders, he hated rats and he ran away from wasps. All pretty normal. All pretty standard.
The magic thing happened over the course of a few weeks, when things started to come to him. Not answers, or knowledge, or insight, or anything like that ā but actual things. Lamps, and bottles of water and big, heavy books. Theyād fly at him as soon as he looked at them and heād have to duck or jump back or run screaming from the room.
At first, Adedayo thought he was being haunted. Then he thought that he must have annoyed an invisible man at some point. One afternoon, after a teapot had collided with his face, he covered the kitchen floor in flour and waited for a footprint to appear. His mother appeared first, of course, and yelled at him, told him to clean it up. Adedayo was more scared of his mum than he was of an invisible man, so he did what he was told and wondered why he was being singled out for torment by this invisible gentleman when his two younger sisters were way more annoying than he ever managed to be.
Then his grandmother came to stay. She was a small Nigerian woman who didnāt speak much English, but her health wasnāt the best and she couldnāt stay on her own any more. Adedayoās sisters were told they had to share a room and their grandmother ā their beloved ƬyĆ” agba ā moved in.
It took some time to adjust to a new person in the house, but she was lovely, so nobody minded, and a few weeks later she knocked on Adedayoās door.
Adedayo didnāt speak much Yoruba, his grandmotherās language. His parents were both English speakers and, once theyād moved to Ireland to start a family, thatās how theyād raised him and his sisters. Theyād tried to teach him a few words over the years, but he didnāt have much interest in learning, so, when his grandmother sat beside him on the bed, he prepared himself for a few long, long minutes of hesitations and the slow searching for words in English that always accompanied the rather pointless stories of her childhood. But she was his ƬyĆ” agba, and he loved her, so Adedayo smiled and pretended with all his heart to be interested in whatever she had to say.
She surprised him, then, by telling him something so brain-punchingly interesting that it changed his life forever.
She told him, in that hesitant way of hers, that magic was real, and that she was magic, and so was he.
At first, he thought she was just telling him a story to entertain him, but when she clicked her fingers and conjured a fireball into her hand it all started to make sense. The odd occurrences, the weird coincidences, the objects that moved on their own ā that was magic. His grandmother explained that there were rules for people like them; there were styles of magic he could specialise in, other magical people ā sorcerers, or mages ā he could meet. She told him about the Sanctuaries around the world, and the wars that had been fought between the sorcerers who wanted to enslave ordinary people and the sorcerers who wanted to protect them.
He had such a life ahead of him, she said. Such wonders to uncover.
She taught him some things ā how to move objects by manipulating the air around them; how to make strands ofĀ energy dance in the palms of his hands; how to click his fingers and generate sparks. She told him about the three names that sorcerers have ā the name theyāre given, the name they take, and their true name, the source of all their power.
But she was an old, old woman, and, a few weeks after his fifteenth birthday, her health deteriorated so much she had to be taken to hospital. Her energy dipped so that she lost all of her English and could only speak the language of her childhood. When Adedayo went in to sit with her, she woke, took his hand and said weakly, āMĆ” Åi Ć pĆ³tĆ.ā Then she smiled, and closed her eyes.
MĆ” Åi Ć pĆ³tĆ, he repeated in his head. MĆ” Åi Ć pĆ³tĆ. He made a note to ask his folks what that meant, but it slipped his mind, and his grandmother passed away later that night, and Adedayo was left with a lifetime of questions, a heart full of grief and a polished wooden box.
His grandmother had insisted that it had to go to him, apparently. That only he would know what to do with it.
The box was the size of a biscuit tin. It had carvings across the lid and along the sides ā carvings that looked like letters, that looked like words, but werenāt. There was no lock, no latch, no way to open it. There was nothing inside, though. Or there didnāt seem to be when Adedayoās mum shook it. His dad tried prising the lid off with a screwdriver. Didnāt work.
The wooden box had been sitting on Adedayoās desk, under a pile of pristine textbooks and dog-eared graphic novels, for weeks when Adedayo woke in the middle of the night, suddenly knowing how to open it.
He got out of bed, crossed the dark room and cleared the junk off the lid. He tapped the carvings on the boxās left and right sides, then pressed, then tapped again and moved his fingers in a swirling motion.
A dim blue light shone from between the carvings, travelling across the box in strange, swirling patterns. There were sounds from inside, like wooden cogs turning.
And then there was a click.
Suddenly apprehensive, and not a little nervous, Adedayo ever so slowly lifted the lid. Inside was dark. Inside was empty.
But something in that emptiness reached out and Adedayo went rigid, his fingers splayed, his legs locked straight, his head back and the muscles in his neck standing out. He felt a consciousness, more than one, poking through his mind, picking out his language, sorting through what he knew of the world, and then his knees wobbled and he went floppy and staggered back a few steps before collapsing.
A hand emerged from the box.
The hand became a forearm and then there was an elbow, and the elbow pressed down on the table for leverage and a shoulder appeared and then a head, a head with a black veil and horns poking out, a head far too big to be squeezing through a box the size of a biscuit tin.
This thing, this being, was called the Sathariel. Adedayo didnāt know how he knew that ā he just did. It was like there was a swimming pool full of weird knowledge and heād just cannonballed into it. He watched the Sathariel climb out of the box and stand by the table, his black robes long and ragged, his breathing heavy, his horns sharp.
He had mottled green hands tipped with black nails, and from his robes he drew a gnarled staff as tall as he was. The smell he brought with him was pungent and made Adedayo think of people screaming.
Something else came out of the box: a tentacle, wet and dripping. It probed the air, then found the table, and a second one came out to join it, then another. Then thereĀ were a dozen tentacles, some as thin as a catās tongue, some as thick as an elephantās trunk, and once theyād gained purchase they lifted the Cythraul straight up out of the box.
The Cythraul, the Many-Tentacled One, hid most of his body beneath a robe of soiled crimson, but Adedayo caught a flash of pale, squirming flesh that made his stomach roil. The Cythraul had a wide, gaping mouth lined with small, sharp teeth, like a lamprey eel, and a single black, blinking eye. He looked down at Adedayo and then, thankfully, away.
There was another creature in the box. The last of the Apocalypse Kings unfurled himself from his confinement and stepped into the bedroom. Tall and thin, black-haired and pale, long-faced and red-eyed, the Deathless wore a robe of rags and filth that fitted him like kingly vestments.
He looked round Adedayoās bedroom and breathed in, then smiled.
āSmells like feet,ā he said, and all three of them vanished.
2.
Adedayo got home and apologised for being so late. He told his parents heād been out walking, thinking about his ƬyĆ” agba. They seemed to accept that, and let the matter drop.
His sisters arrived in the kitchen and announced that, even though ĆyĆ” Agba was gone, and so a bedroom was suddenly available, they wanted to keep sharing. They announced this like they expected their request to be denied ā his youngest sisterās eyes were already brimming with tears. When they were told that was fine, they shrieked and hugged and hugged their parents and even hugged Adedayo, and ran back to their room.
Adedayoās dad chuckled and went into the living room.
āMum,ā said Adedayo.
She was making herself a cup of tea. āYes, sweetie?ā
āWhat was ĆyĆ” Agbaās life like? Back in Nigeria?ā
His mum paused. āIām not too sure, actually. She never talked about it all that much. She was happy, though. I know that.ā She smiled. āShe used to tell me stories, when I was your youngest sisterās age. All kinds of stories sheād make up about people with amazing names all over Africa. People with magical powers. And in the stories she was always in the middle of the adventure. Always having fun. I miss her.ā
āI miss her too.ā
His motherās smile turned sad, and she took a packet of biscuits down from the cupboard and held it out. āTake two,ā she said, āand donāt tell your sisters.ā
He took two, and she winked and carried her tea to the doorway.
āMum,ā said Adedayo, āwhat does mĆ” Åi Ć pĆ³tĆ mean?ā
She frowned. āWhat?ā
āItās just something ĆyĆ” Agba said to me in hospital. What does it mean?ā
āAre you sure thatās what she said?ā
āI mean ā¦ I might not be remembering it exactly right, but I think so.ā
His mum shrugged one shoulder. āItās just itās an odd thing to say, thatās all. It means donāt open the box.ā
Adedayo looked at her, then nodded. āYep,ā he said. āMakes sense.ā

PROLOGUE
āThere, there, Your Highness,ā the guard said as he wiped away the princesses tears, āIt mustāve been so scary down there. Iām sorry you had to go all alone this time. If I had permission or the strength to go with you I would. But youāre alright now. Iāll be standing guard outside your door all night if you need me.āĀ
The guard had a smile so small you would only see it if you knew to look for it. The princess didnāt need to see the smile to know he meant what he said. Out of all the soldiers in the Kingdom hers were the most loyal.Ā
āPlease donāt tell my father I was cryingā¦ or the King!ā
āI would never, it will be our little secret, alright, Princess Seraphina,ā he stuck out it pink to show he meant his promise.
āThank you,ā the young girl crawled back under her blankets as her guard headed towards the door, āGoodnight, Dante.ā
REAL TIME I GUESS
You know when you tell your husband for days to not do something because there will be a negative outcome, but he does it anyway? And what you told him would happen, does? And yet he still acts surprised and upset? Sometimes takes his anger out on you via a cold shoulder and glare? No admittance that you were right? Thatās what itās like to be married to the Captain of the Silver Eagles.Ā
I love Nozel dearly but he is more annoying than my father-in-law and the ladies of the court asking about babies. Actually, now that I think about it, the whole Silva family had something about themā¦Ā
āVice Captain? Are you alright?ā
Thatās one way to snap me out of a scheme
āOh, Nils, Iām sorry. A thought crossed my mind and I got lost in itā¦ What were you saying?ā Will probably get scolded for that later.
āI was just telling you how Iād improve myself before my next mission with what I learned on the previous oneā¦ Do you think Captain will be pleased with my plan?āĀ
Royalty always wants to improve themselves without much training, but I canāt say that to him without it causing a rile so I just smile at him.
āI think Nozel will be very pleased. Now if you wouldnāt mind, I do have a lot of work to get to,ā I gesture to some papers on my desk.Ā
He nods and takes his leave. I sigh and turn my chair to face the window. Noelle should have gotten her grimoire by now, surely. I do not want to do this paperwork or deal with the hell my in laws will unleash on their baby sister, but if anyone had a chance of redirecting their attention to another failure it was me and my womb.Ā
I play with the ring on my left hand. It was his mothers, in fact Nozel had gifted me with more jewelry than I could ever wear that had come from Lady Acierās collection. Sometimes I wondered if he got it all or first dibs and took it all because he was the oldest. Perhaps her collection had just been so expansive I could have a shit load and the other kids could do. The girls didnāt ever bat a lash when I wore her crowns and necklaces.Ā
Thereās a firm knock on my door, they donāt pause before opening it. Husbands, ya know? I looked over my shoulder to see heās entered my office, not bothering to shut the door (to avoid scandal though Iāve never understood how married people can be scandalous with each other? The policies of this country were difficult to understand).Ā
āYes,ā I ask, raising my brow at him.
āNoelle has received her grimoire,ā his face was bleak.
āAnd?ā
āAnd she still cannot control her magic. Sheās still a shame to House Silva.ā
The fluctuation in his mana told me all I needed to know.
āNozel-ā
āDonāt try to coddle me, Seraphina. You donāt understand what this means for my family and our reputation.ā
I wonder in our 14 years of marriage if heās ever learned that I can read his mind and emotions. He kept on the mean big brother act and never shut it off. However, I like to take opportunities to argue when I see them. I turn my whole body to face him and cross my arms.
āLike how we donāt have an heir?ā
āDonāt start this right now,ā his voice was low and serious, āNebra, Solid, and I will be having dinner with our father and grandparents tonight.ā
āThen Iāll join you,ā I shot up out of my chair, āIt would look bad if I stayed here.ā
His stare was cold. I started to prepare an argument in my head.
āFine. But wear something nice,ā he moved his attention to the deep cut of my dress, āMaybe we should get your robes adjusted.ā
āOh darling, I think thatās the most attention youāve given my breasts in our whole marriage.ā I bit my tongue, a little too late for that, Sera. Oops.Ā
āTsh,ā Nozel turned and headed for the door, āYou should probably have the maids at the castle help you get readyā¦ We both know you wonāt be able to braid your own hair.ā
āI beg your pardon?ā
The door closed and I was alone again. The mother fucker. He was right, but that mother fucker. If he knew what kind of foul language I had stored in my head for himā¦ Maybe tonight will be the night all chaos explodes. Dinner and a show with me as the main actress.Ā
I started to make a mental list of things to bring up during our argument as I made a spacial magic gate to my quarters at the Silva Castle.Ā
----
I opted for an emerald gown with silver jewelry for tonight. Rule number one of House Silva: all the jewelry is silver. If you happen to have gold it was either a gift from House Vermillion or House Kira and you only ever wore it to fit a dress code House Vermillion made for a ball. Same thing for red and blue. Do not wear red or blue unless you want to piss off your husband, which Iāll admit is fun but he threw the poor dress into the fireplace the next morning. We donāt even share a room, he had to wake up early, come in, and find it to do that.Ā
Rule number two: be very, very good at keeping your thoughts to yourself. Especially when it comes to Noelle, Acier, and your lack of offspring.Ā
āSeraphina, perhaps you decided to join us because you and Nozel have some good news to share,āĀ if Nebra was anything it was blunt and to the point.Ā
I gave Nozel the side eye.
āNo,ā He said while lifting his wine to his lips, āJust didnāt want to bother socializing with the rest of the squad tonight.ā
I gave her a meek smile.
āWell, Seraphina, I have something to show you, Solid rose from his seat and walked over to Noelle who was staring at her food with tears in her eyes. He pulled her grimoire out from her side while she winced. āLook at how thin this is. Youāre more a Silva than Noelle could ever be.ā
I dropped my shoulders and focused on my plate in front of me.
āI guess...āĀ
----
If I got anything from that dinner itās that I needed to find a way to sneak Noelle out of the castle and get her away; at least for a day. I was sat at my vanity removing all the tiny gems the servant had insisted on putting in my hair. If I couldnāt stand up to her to my in-laws the least I could do was get her away. God how many gems were there? I started at the bell to call a maidā¦ I really hate doing this but if thereās one thing I cannot do it is my hair.Ā
After a few moments a young girl came to my room and went right to work undoing the braids and taking out the gems. I watched her in the mirror, she never took her eyes off my head.
āSo, whatās the hot gossip from the servants quarters?ā
She paused.
āIām sure nothing would be of interest to you maāam.ā
I purse my lips.Ā
āIf I say you can keep all the gems in my hair?ā
āThat wouldnāt be necessary, the masters pay us kindly.ā
āOhā¦ well surely you heard something that would be of interest to me?ā
āMaāam, I know you donāt stay here often, but typically you wouldnāt speak to me so casuallyā¦ā
āWho cares about that? Itās late. Itās just you and me here. Everyone else is probably settled into bed,ā No budge. Oh. āLord Nozel wonāt be visiting my chambers tonight. Itās alright.ā
āSurely the Captain visits his wife every nightā¦ You two are in love and youāre so beautiful.ā
Great. Not the can of worms I wanted to open. And now I gave her shit to say about me!
āHe stays in his room when I am bleeding.ā And now I have to stab myself or else sheāll know I lied. Dammit.Ā
āOh, the other servant didnāt mention you wereā¦ Would you like me to get you some warm towels?ā
āNo, what I would like is some information that only someone in your position would know.ā
āReally, maāam. Thereās nothing happening these days.ā
āPlease?ā
āUmā¦ well I have a friend that works for House Vermillion and she said theyāve been preparing Lady Mereoleonaās room for her return. They expect her to arrive tomorrow afternoon.ā
Oh god.
āAnd Lord and Lady Vermillion had to have meat brought in from the town! The chefs donāt even know how to cook meat!ā
āSurely they can just give it to the girl and let her cook it herselfā¦ā
āYouāre funny, Lady Seraphina.ā
āWell, ya know, someone in the family has to be! Thank you for your help. Youāre dismissed, go off to bed now.ā
The girl bowed and left.
And she had the right fucking idea.
I need to leave too. Mereoleona? No thank you. God only knows what kind of torment she has planned for me. Actually, probably not God. Probably no higher being.
I need to hide somewhere and take Noelle with me. I throw off my dressing gown and scramble to put on clothes, throwing random shit I think Iāll want in a bag. Real manic style. Now if thereās one thing I am not it is a bad liar. I throw the blankets off my bed and lay as if Iām going to sleep. Crossing my leg so it sorta comes to wear my center lays and take out a knife and cut my legā¦ which heals pretty quickly given my abilities. Iām almost certain itās not enough to be convincing but I am far more concerned in avoiding the Vermillion to care.Ā
Next stop, Noelleās room. I knock on the door. No answer so I help myself. Sheās asleep, dry tears around her eyes. I put my hand on her shoulder.
āHey, wake up. Noelle.ā
She gasps and her eyes fly open, instantly putting her arms in defense. I take a step backā¦ They didnāt wake her up to hurt herā¦ did they?
āPack a bag, weāre going into hiding.ā
āWhat?ā
āLady Mereoleona is coming back for her yearly visit. Iām taking you and weāre gonna go hide at the beach castle.ā Yeah, I married into a two castle family. Had its perks.
āWhy?ā
āBecause youāre my baby sister by marriage and I think we both could use a little vacation. Donāt you agree?ā
āReally? But what about Nozel?ā
āIāll deal with him if he notices. Chances are no one will know. So get up, grab your stuff, and let's go.ā
She got out of bed quick. I sat at her vanity while she gathered some things.Ā
āAlso, no servants.ā
āNo servants?!ā She turned me so quick she almost snapped her neck.
āYouāll live. This is about survival. Now,ā I stand to make a portal to the beach castle, āletās go.ā

Accepted ā KÅ Gowyu
ā„ Ā KÅ Gowyu aka. The Lucky Bastard looks like Ryo Narita (actor) ā„Ā Ā He was born October 31, 1570 ; making him 450 but he appears to be late 20s ā„ Ā This Fae is Pansexual and a King of Hearts ā„Ā Ā He is a gambler and loan shark
Biography
Ko Gowyu was born a fae, he pierced through life with the touch of magic and luck. He should have been blessed, felt blessed, because heād risen with chance on his side. From his very first cry, heād been granted the type of good fortune that many sought and perished for. At least, many in Kadeu did. But heād never felt like heād truly been given anything else but the position of the shadow of the first born of the Ko. The wonderful Ko, a name he wore with all the pride in the world. Without it, without this Fae blood, he wouldnāt be much you see.Ā
Among many other things, he would not be able to read the fortune of the lucky and the unlucky, he would not be able to play with the fortune of oneās man, as easily as he could slide his coin from one knuckle to another. Fortune did not simply entail the weight of their pockets either, because it came in many shades and shapes in life. Because, as all the other Kos, he was given the gift to perceive oneās fortune, to influence it and to make the balance tilt in which way he desired to.Ā
Gowyu cared none that he could not affect his own fortune for some odd reason, maybe because it was more satisfying for him to use those of othersā, to make them believe that it was his luck and not theirs that was giving him the fortunate glow that many lacked in Kadeu. Where he lacked in reach and strength with his abilities, because they would always stand unmatched next to his older siblings, especially his older sister, he made up for it with tricks of the mind.Ā
The problem was, Gowyu for being third born between his mother and father, and not having his abilities as enhanced as the first of the Ko, Sayge, he was not a suitable candidate for the inheritance. For being first born, Sayge would always wear the favor of his parents to ascend to take over as head of family, to inherit everything that the first born had to. Trust and believe that Gowyu understood the traditions, the way things worked and how the first born was to carry the lineage of the clan, it was how things had always ābeenā.Ā
But things tended to grow old, traditions had to change, rules were meant to be broken.Ā
How was it that he was refused the ascension to something heād always felt heād been born for, simply because heād come, not second, but third in place? He would always be standing there, under the high stature of his siblings, although the second son had never felt like heād carried the same rancune that ran deep in Gowyuās heart. It poisoned him from very young, at first, too young to truly grasp the idea that he would never be able to proudly wear the title of Koi like heād seen his father do for so long before Sayge took over.
Good, all knowing and important Sayge with her - higher than thou - gift for luck that did not rival his. Not because his aptitude was grander, but because even in the giving of his magic, he paled next to her. He paled in all aspects. His entourage had had rather cruel ways of reminding him of his big sister and how she always looked perfect, did everything the way it should beāshe stood proud and how she would bring the best era to be seen yet on the name of the Ko. Heād grown being fed the venom, each time he would keep quiet, bite his tongue rather than cause a scene and risk showing the disdain heād started to grow by the age of 50 and seeing Sayge take on her role easily.Ā
All sheād need to do was give an heir to the clan and her fate would be sealed, his fate would be cemented. It irritated him beyond measure, that to be born before him put her on a pedestal where she never could be knocked off from. At least, it had seemed that way for so many years after sheād gone to Kadeu to look after the casinos. It had stayed that way for many other yearsābut soon enough, the chips had begun to crack through the perfect picture that his mother and father had wished for their little princess. Sheād shown no sign so far of wanting to give the clan an heir, and as far as Gowyu knew, that was a non negotiable clause.Ā
You see, where the giving of an heir would be an easily done job for many first borns of many clans among the faesāit seemed his all so flawless and almighty big sister had an issue with that certain rule and it had pleased him from the first time heād heard his parents quietly argue over the matter. Where Sayge was away at Kadeu, doing all she could to forget that her time was ticking, Gowyu had gathered every ounce of wits he had left in the realms of Fae, all the information he could from his parentsāthe appearance he had kept of the son who supported his older sibling in being the apt choice to reign over the clan paying its dues in how easily it got him to hear everything he needed to know.Ā
No one could suspect charming, gleaming innocent looking Gowyu of having the darkest of desires or motivation in finally passing through a blue moon and settling in Kadeu. No one except for Sayge, of course. Who was she to speak though? She was failing at the most mundane of tasks, lay down, take the seed of a willing Fae and give their parents and the clan what they desired more than her intelligence. In the end, they cared none of what she was capable of, like they cared none of what he could bring because he was born third of the Ko. Still, she was the first one in line, still and the only way to truly turn the wheels laid somewhere in the back of his brewing mind. A child, an heir.Ā
How tempting was it to constantly taunt her with the idea that it would be that easy, to take the reins out of her hands. How satisfying was it, to be so close, close enough to be the constant reminder that the clock was going tik,-tok, ; tik-tok.Ā
All it needed was a little push in the right path, in his path. Gowyu did not care to quite understand the motives behind her refusal to finally do what it took to get herself seated comfortably without a looming threat of ever losing what she seemed so intent on keeping jealously. He cared none to understand anything that came from his sister, he cared none of the motives of the clan, what he cared for was what heād always convoited and always been denied. What he cared about was making everyone who had laughed at the idea, when heād said that he could be the next in line, bite their tongues as they realized he was more capable than Sayge.Ā
Although, heād been young and foolish when heād sprouted those words to an intimate entourage. Heād long learned to keep his secrets sealed tight and away from anyone else but his big sister and their brother. It was better when one moved in the shadows, after all, heād been born in the same darkness, so who could blame him for wearing its cloak and letting the balm of it surround his heart, turn it inside out so it could bleed out green?Ā
When then, would he be able to close the deal and get in the palm of his hand what he wanted to tear out of her simply for the pleasure of seeing her seethe with the knowledge that he had been the one to do so? Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrowāGowyu had to admit to himself, he was quite fine with the leisure and pleasures he could indulge in at Kadeu, while also constantly keeping her on edge whenever he could. Antagonizing her at every turn seemed to fill his days with better times than heād ever had back on the realm of the Fae.Ā
The walls were closing in on Sayge and he liked to think that he would be here to witness her squashed in between the four of them as he sat and let the blood of her fate pool at his feet. In fact, there was something so easily corruptible in the taste of Kadeu that seemed to make him the most fortunately cruel of all men. Where back on the realm of Fae, he was constantly tormented with what would never be his, here on Kadeu he could constantly torment the one person whose presence overshadowed him back in their realms. Kadeu filled his nights with countless pleasures, to play with these fortunes, to watch them first exhilarated by the idea he would implement in their mind, that he could make them richer, luckier, make them have everything they wanted and he did.Ā
Gowyu was also a surprisingly generous man, he understood that life was not all that prettily laid out for many, he had his own troubles to prove that, didnāt he? So he let them have the best ride of their lives, all free of charge, with their name and their seal on a contract that he would provide and they would pay him back the money he would loan them to play and win more. Not just in the casino, but anywhere money could be invested to give more. Bets, lands, education, so many dreams had to be fulfilled. But as generous a man as he was, he was not a god, and he did not give without consequences and when it became a bore to have a contract fulfilled to the very last T, Gowyu would let the entertainment roll in.Ā
All it usually took was for him to stop giving them the gentle push heād been given them to win and then, all he had to do was sit and watch it all crumble. The funny thing was, first they believed that it was just for a day. An unlucky man, who had never won a thing in their life until Gowyu entered it, losing once after an unshaken record of winnings, thinking that a day of misfortune was just an accident. Was that notāfunny? It was, it greatly amused him. To watch them fall, one chip at a time, then beg for more time, then beg for more money, then be stuck in the corner, going mad at what went wrong, where did it go wrongāwaiting for Gowyu to give them grace. When heād given them so much of it already.Ā
How greedy.
Needless to say, the despair was something he showed no care for, on their knees and screaming in agony, he would only alleviate their pain with one thing, to have them bound to him with another contract.Ā
A contract that any demon would have been proud to hold, their soul in exchange of what they owned, properties, coins, life. They would work for him, under him, do every of his biddings, they would be everything he wanted them to be and if any of those conditions were ever not met, then they would only have themselves to blame when the clock of their lives would come to an abrupt end.Ā This was what Kadeu was for Gowyu, a battlefield where he was slowly crafting and building a kingdom of broken lives. It not only filled his pockets with coins, but it gave him the great joy of doing so while waiting for the right time to act on the threat he knew he was to Sayge.Ā
Soon enough, life would take on a new leaf for Ko Gowyu.
Then there was SamhainĀ ā20
Where had he been again, when all of that had unfolded? Ah right, somewhere in between leaving the Blue Moon Festival because heād grown fed up with seeing the sight of so many faes, especially the one of his own clan and family. Fed up with keeping up with the pretence of this image that he was growing closer and closer of undoing with each years he spent in Kadeu, the one that had his mother still thinking he was nothing more than the good and obedient son sheād always told him to be.
Obedience had always been the most important one.
Gowyu had been in his carriage, two men facing him in the personal space they were to keep safe from anything intruding, when itād come to an abrupt halt, a movement that did throw him forward. One of his men had had the knee jerk reaction to touch him to stabilize him and Gowyu had just about been ready to cut a finger or two off his hand for that simple gesture. Simply to proof that the threat he threw around at not being touched least one wished to lose the very hand that had been used to do so, was not to be taken lightly. But his skin burning with what felt like the same sensation heād felt the first time heād been given a rank and status in the city had interrupted him in that thought.
Lucky for his manās fingers. Heād rolled the sleeves of his shirt with a sigh, a bit of annoyance and nothing else, nothing more before rolling it back down. What was the use of these brandings?
This land and its curse was getting more ridiculous by the day, this would never affect him, no matter how hard it tried, because he controlled the pieces that were affected by its idiotic process. A system that left so many vulnerable to the bite of many sharks was definitely not one heād ever thought he could find so profitable, but he would not begin to complain. Because the men facing him, in charge of his protection and safety, their drawings had revealed certain things to him, in their haste to check if their fears had been in the right place after seeing Gowyuās.
Theirs had given him even more revealing secrets over the ones heād already been using to keep them as the loyal pets they were. Gowyu had had a grin then, hadnāt he? One that might have frozen the blood in their veins, turned them white with apprehension. It wasnāt just going to be them though, all the other ones who had had bits of their lives to hide that heād been so generously helping, they would soon find themselves with that same expression.
Needless to say, that Samhan ā20 had given Gowyu the best gift a man who was born to take advantage of otherās weaknesses could ever receive ; leverage. Oh, it had also been his birthday, so all in all, a memorable present.
Personality
Gowyu is known for his aloof personality, he is known to be fun, jovious. To play everything he owns on the table with a nonchalance. He is known to offer a smile, with a coin constantly rolling against his knuckles. He says it is his lucky charm, who knows really, if the words that leave his mouth are ever really true.
It is also safe to say, Gowyu doesnāt care about anything else but his clan and the role he wants to play in it, as well as the role he doesnāt want his big old sister to be playing in it. So when it comes to the factions of Kadeu, he only sees them as a means to an end, they offer entertainment in a way that nothing else does back on Fae realm. Whether it be Hearts, Clubs, Diamonds or Spades, why should he care for any of them at all? He doesnāt. If you want something from him, heāll give it to you. A contract you believe will bring you the luck that seems to follow him all around? Heāll make you sign it. Anything you think he can give you, he will feed you all these sweet nothings about fortune, getting out of the slums, winning bigāhe has the money to loan, he has the ways to gain more, to give more, to lock all of these meaningless lives in a jar and use them later on like pieces in a game of chess where he is the only player.
Gowyu tends to mingle among lowrankers because theyāre easier to swindle, he will however stray far from mentioning any of that to any high rankers in his circle. He understands the system in Kadeu, especially in Hearts. If these lowrankers expect him to get them out of their garbage canned lives and address them in the streets just because heās seen them and thrown a coin or two at them in exchange for some favors, then theyāre dumb enough to be kicked and sneered at in the presence of those high rankers. He feels no remorse for the things he does, he thinks he is entitled to all of them, even the ones he failed to obtain. Like the title and status that Sayge holds. His reputation in Kadeu is both mysterious and disdainful, the highrankers might mock him because he is not his sister and they favor her more than they do him, the lowrankers might see him as a treacherous god, simply granting their wishes for a rightful price. At the end of it all, none of this matters, none of it ever will until he gets what he truly wants. Ā
Congratulations Ria your app has been accepted and your first plot drop will be sent to you soon.
Please follow and welcome @gowyuko to Kadeu!

Could you do a Jurdan fanfic where they reunite post During Judeās banishment but pre-queen of nothing but Jude is on a date, or Cardan thinks some guy is courting Jude and he jealously glamours the guy to leave her alone. And it leads to angst?
Of course, lovely! Thank you for the request! It turned out a bit longer than I had anticipated, and I tweaked it a bit, but Iām happy with the result. I hope you enjoy it, as much as I loved writing it.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jude Durate, High Queen of Elfhame, Wife to Cardan Greenbriar, was on her seventh date with a human boy. The boy was sweet, the complete opposite of the folk in Faerie. The kind of boy you fell for slowly over time until you looked at him one day and realized that you were wholly and utterly in love with him.Ā
Jude was terrified of him. Vivi had set them up, wanting Jude to heal from the scars of Faerie, and during the month and a half sheād been in the mortal lands, she learned what people meant when they said your heart could be divided in two. Though she loved Cardan, he seemed like a dream, like she could never truly have him. Lucas was more real, more than a daydream.Ā
Attempting to be discreet, Jude slanted her eyes to study the boy walking next to her, chattering on about mundane things. He was averagely tall with sandy blonde hair and striking emerald eyes. He looked nothing like Cardan. In her eyes, that was all that mattered. He was a distraction, a bit of fun during her banishment. After all, her delightful husband was surely doing the same.
They were walking along the pier near a beach Jude had discovered during the month away from Faerie. It was a quiet spot, away from the worrying gaze of Vivi. The boy, Lucas, suddenly smiled at her shyly, a flush reddening his cheeks to a brilliant flame. āWould it be okay if I held your hand?ā
Judeās heart hammered in her chest, wondering what she was getting herself into. If she said no, his disappointment would simmer awkwardly between them. If she said yesā¦ would it be a betrayal to her vows? She swallowed the phlegm in her throat, trying to shove away all thoughts of what this small gesture meant. Without giving herself a moment to second guess what she was doing, Jude forced her lips to upturn at the corners, as though she was pleased he asked. āI would like nothing more.ā She stretched out her hand and laced his fingers with hers, secretly enjoying the feel of his smooth palm against her calloused one. Lucasās eyes widened imperceptibly at her move.Ā
Wonderment filling his gaze, Lucas studied her scarred palm. āWhere did you get this scar from?ā He traced the scar she had received when she pledged her loyalty to Dain with reverence.
What was she to tell him? She couldnāt very well say that she had cut open her own palm in order to gain the protection of the Prince of Elfhame. He would think her mad, and then who knows what would happen to her. She would have to lie, as she did about most things. Her mortal ability to skirt around the truth came in handy once more. āChildhood accident. You know how kids are. Magnets for disaster!ā
Lucas chuckled, the fading light of the sun hitting the golden flecks of his eyes as he turned his head towards her. āI know exactly what you mean!ā His fingers danced over her scar lightly, lovingly while his other hand traced circles in the sand. āWhen I was six years old, and learning how to ride a bike, I lost control and crashed right into a big old maple tree! Cut open my arm horribly. My grandma almost had a heart attack with the amount of blood that was on me.ā When he mentioned his grandma, his face took on a softened look, his full lips fondly turning up as he reminisced on the past.Ā
āBoth of us are covered in scars, as the two accident prone children we were.ā She was deflecting, she knew, from the truth. But it was the only way to keep him safe from her past.Ā
From the corner of her eye, Jude saw a Golden Retriever huddled up against a building, with the faint shimmer of wings hovering in her peripheral vision. Judeās pace slowed down as the pixie tormenting the dog smirked at her, taunting her. Even now, far away from Court, her past continued to haunt her, reminding her how she did not fit into the mortal world. She would never be safe here.
Lucas, oblivious to the pixie and her racing thoughts, pointed out a landmark on the far side of the coast. āThat lighthouse over there is where I lost my first tooth. I was so excited by the ships, I wiggled my loose tooth a little too hard. Blood gushed all over me, staining my favorite shirt. My parents fussed over me for days. I even had the tooth fairy visit me for the first time. Found a whole dollar underneath my pillow the next morning.ā
The tooth fairy. Such a human tradition. Jude had never experienced it, as her parents had been murdered before her teeth fell out.Ā
A few people moved around the two of them on the sidewalk, not wanting to interfere with the moment they were having. Jude, not aware they would be seen by anybody, blushed fiercely. She looked away from the fond looks people threw her way, and pulled Lucas to a stop. She dragged him over to the sand, far away from the pixie, and made to sit down. Mercifully, he didnāt question it. āWhat are your parents like?ā She asked, trying, and failing, to calm her nerves.
Ā āThey were wonderful people from what I can remember. Every Saturday night they took me to the lighthouse to look at the ships docking in the harbor. My father worked there, and rarely left his post. The sea called to him, as it does to me.ā Ships now were now pulling in, guided by the beam of light pouring out from the top of the lighthouse. Lucas watched the boats, a fascinated look taking over his features.
As the sun set over the horizon, glowing softly with pinks, purples, and oranges, gulls crying out in the distance, waves crashing against the beach, Jude felt a sense of peace settle over her, despite the pixie. With Lucas it was easy to feel safe, to let her mind drift away. In another life, she pictured herself with him. Forcing the words out around the memories of Cardan, she softly asked, āHave your parents died?ā
With a rueful smile, Lucas looked up at the sky watching the seagulls circle overhead, his eyes far away. āYeah. They died in a fire when I was eight. My grandparents raised me after that. It was hard to accept that they were gone for a while. I couldnāt even go to the lighthouse without thinking of them, of having the memories crash over me like the waves against the shore.ā He was becoming detached, distant.
Jude did something she never expected herself to do. Gently, she took his hand out of hers, pulling his face towards her, so that they were eye to eye. āMy parents died when I was seven. I guess weāre both orphans. I was raised by anā¦ uncle after that with my two sisters. Youāre not alone. Orphans always find each other, searching for a home in one another, hoping they will finally belong somewhere.ā
The sea rocked against the sand, splashing the two of them with little droplets. Neither noticed, too lost in the depthless ache they felt deep in their chests.Ā
Reaching out a shaky hand, Lucas brushed away a stray strand of hair that was stuck against her cheek. āI think Iāve found my home.ā
Knowing she was already damned, Jude leaned forward and drew Lucas into her arms, resting her chin on his shoulder, breathing in his scent. He smelled of cedar, the sea, with faint undercurrents of spices. She shut her eyes, relishing the feel of safety in his arms.
His breath tickled her ear as he moved towards her. āWhat was your childhood like? You never talk about it.ā Immediately she stiffened, memories flashing by of a gentry member biting off the tip of her ring finger, another yanking her out from under a table at a revel and being tormented and glamoured, wearing rowan berries everywhere to avoid her mortality betraying her.
A childhood that was no childhood at all.Ā
āIt was a childhood like no other,ā she choked out.Ā
He pulled back, grasping her forearms and looking into her eyes, brow furrowed in confusion. āIām sorry if I hit a sore subject, I only wish to know you more.ā
Before she could answer she was hit with the scent of roses, citrus and the overwhelming smell of wine. There was only one being with that aroma that she knew. Cardan.
Sure enough, there he glided behind her on the sand, his black eyes boring into her, burning her like a brand. His tail peeked out from his trousers, gently swaying in the wind. A cruel grin bedecked his face, as he narrowed in on the boy who held her in his arms.Ā
āJude?ā Lucas asked, drawing her gaze away from her husband. Gods. Her husband. The King of Elfhame was here. In the mortal lands. And here she was, on a date.
āSorry, I-I think Iām getting tired.ā Behind Lucasās back, Cardan snickered.
Lucas nodded, eyes roving over her too bright eyes, the fake smile adorning her lips. āBefore we turn in, I have something for you.ā
āFor me?ā
āYes. Just a moment.ā Reaching in the back pocket of his pants, Lucas drew out a necklace with a sterling silver ring hung on the chain. The ring twisted around a small pearl, edged with small gems placed around the base. The ring was simple, beautiful. Perfect.Ā
She was speechless. āDo you like it?ā
āI love it.ā But just as she said it, the raven haired boy from her past crept into her vision, patiently waiting for her to go over to him. Lucas didnāt notice, too lost in Jude to see anything beyond.Ā
Lucas gently swung the necklace around Judeās throat, carefully securing the latch. He lifted up the hair that was trapped by the chain. Jude smiled softly at the gift, and at the boy who had given it to her without a second thought, attempting to block out Cardan so she could remember this moment without the stain of Faerie. āI found the pearl when I was out at sea a few weeks ago, and I thought of you. I made it myself last night. Itās a promise necklace, since I didnāt know what size ring you wore. A promise that, one day, weāll be married.ā
Judeās smile slipped off her face. āMarriage?ā Unbeknownst to him, she was already married to another, her heart belonged to another. In another life, perhaps, this could have worked, but things being the way they were, it wouldnāt last. She had duties and promises to fulfill.
Behind them, Cardan had gone stone-still, his tail twitching back and forth. A strange light filled his eyes, the golden ring around his pupil disappearing, his mouth set in a hard line. It was an odd sight to see. Cardan standing on the sand on a mortal beach with his extravagant clothing studded with gems and jewels, his crown perched haphazardly on his head. Of course he brought his crown, as though he was reminding Jude of who he was. If any mortals noticed him, they didnāt let on. He must have been glamoured, for everyone casually flowed around him as though he wasnāt even there.
Lucas twisted around to see why Jude kept looking over his shoulder, and found nothing, for he couldnāt see the ghost from her past. āWhat do you keep looking at? Have I moved too fast?ā He turned to look at her once more, a heartbreaking expression on his face. The confusion hurt Jude as she could never tell him the truth. Never let him know who she really was, and where she had come from.
āJust-Just a dog. I like dogs, thatās all.ā
Carefully Lucas reached for her forearms and pulled her towards him until they were mere feet apart. Cardan moved closer.
āJude. Iām sorry if Iāve startled you with my declarations. Itās just that I know youāre what I want. I know Iāve only known you for a little over a month, but with each passing day I fall in love with you a little bit more. Your wit, your intellect, your dimples, that look you get when you think no one is looking, when you look happy and relaxed, your guard let down. I love you, Jude. If you donāt feel as strongly as me, I understand, I do. Iām prepared to wait a thousand years.ā He nestled his face into her neck, his sandy hair tickling her skin.
Unconsciously she began to run her fingers through his soft hair, wondering if he could feel her racing heart. āLucas-ā She started, about to break his heart, to let him down easy, but suddenly, he jerked under her touch, as if he were a puppet and a puppet master had pulled his strings.
He pulled back as if in a trance, his limbs rigid, rose to his full height and began to walk away. Jude scrambled to her feet and attempted to pull him around. Oblivious to her, he kept marching forwards towards Cardan, never looking back. She hurried in front of him, to see his face. A glazed look had overtaken his features, a blissful expression on his peaceful face. āLucas?ā
There was no answer, no matter how hard she willed him to stop, no matter how many times she shouted his name, there was nothing. No sign of the boy who had given her his heart. So, defeated, she stopped trying to get him to halt and followed him towards the boy who had shattered her life.
Cardan was smirking at her, his hands placed casually in his pockets. āHello, my darling Jude. How are the mortal lands treating you?ā He purred, as soon as Jude was within range. He held out his arms to her, wanting to draw her into a hug, but she crossed her arms, unwilling to give him what he desired.
When she saw Cardan again, she thought sheād be overjoyed, to leap at the chance to go back. But she was angry. So unbelievably angry she wanted to hurt him as he had hurt her. āAfter banishing me and betraying my trust, you ask how I am? You show up, unannounced, mind you, and expect me to embrace you with open arms? No. I shall not. And you glamoured my date.ā Jude frowned, her lips curling downwards, looking at Lucasās dazed expression next to the King of Elfhame.
He dropped his arms, a wounded expression on his face. āI come in peace, to offer you a chance to return. I thought after all my letters, you would understand my regret and how much I wish to see you home.ā
Letters? There had been nothing but silence. āIs this another one of your tricks? To get to me to sympathize with you? I never received anything. And Faerie is not my home. I am mortal, as I am so often reminded, and replaceable. I have no home, not anymore, not after you banished me. I cannot return.ā
Again, the small smile danced across his lips, as if this were a game. āHave I finally outwitted you, Jude Durate, master of tricks and wit?ā
āWhat are you talking about?ā The way he looked at her sent shivers down her spine. She had forgotten how he made her feel. Every touch, every look was as though a fire was exploding in her heart. Passion and desire warred over her common sense until she had given in to the whims of her deepest wants. Look how that had turned out.
Love was a fickle thing. It made you lose all sense until you were a love-stricken fool, incapable of seeing the ugly truth, wanting to believe the best of your partner. Love had turned her into the Court Jester. Playing tricks for them all until she had lost her balance and everything came crashing down around her while everyone laughed. A cascade of disaster.
Cardan took a step closer until they were sharing breath, every feeling she had forced down deep rose up again at the close proximity they were in. Cautiously, as if he didnāt want to startle her, he gently ran a finger down his face. āYou could have returned any time you wanted. Until and unless she is pardoned by the crown, let her not step one foot in Faerie or forfeit her life. Are you not Faerieās Queen? Are you not my wife?ā
Jude felt the world closing in on her as she realized just what this meant. She could have pardoned herself. She was a fool, blinded by her wounded feelings. āWife in name only. Who banishes their wife the day after they are married? You could have warned me, at least. Instead you let me go off into the mortal world, thinking Iād never see you again. I thought I knew better than to get involved with a Faerie, a King at that.ā Now Cardan turned his attention to Lucas, still looking for all the world a love-sick puppy. āIs this mortal the better option?ā Cardanās lip curled. āA mortal who doesnāt even have decent fashion sense.ā Cardan eyed Lucasās clothes seriously, as if his very existence was an affront to everything Cardan stood for.
āLeave him alone. He didnāt do anything except get mixed up with the wrong person.ā
Cardan roughly got hold of Lucasās shirt and pulled him close in an intimate embrace. āFaerie leaves scars to everyone who passes through. You cannot pass through the fire unburned. So he shall suffer the consequences of trying to marry my wife.ā
āCardan what are you-ā Faster than she could follow, faster than she knew he could move, he whipped out a knife from the folds of his tunic and slashed Lucasās forearm, cutting through fabric - with her own blade for that matter. Lucas didnāt even flinch, the glamour erasing any emotion he felt.
Cardan released the boy, his chest heaving, blade dripping in blood, staining the golden flecks of sand a brilliant red.
She lunged forwards trying to sop up the blood with the edge of her dress that had begun to drip down through the torn folds of his shirt. The only thing she accomplished was soaking the blood into her clothes and skin.Ā
āNow the remnants of Faerie will forever be etched upon his skin. Heāll always possess the fear of the land and the retaliation heāll receive if he decides to chase after you again.ā He looked proud of himself, as though he did something worthy or noble. āCome back with me, Jude. Let us return, as King and Queen, as Husband and Wife.āĀ
How dare Cardan believe he had the right to mark a mortal like so, and expect her to be okay with it? Expect her to return to him with open arms. āI will only return with you if you promise to leave Lucas alone. No assassinās sent after him, no poison in his cup. No harm ever to come to him.ā Her heart bled for the boy who had done nothing wrong other than fall in love with the wrong person.
Cardanās tail twitched back and forth as he contemplated her offer. āIf that is what you wish, I shall grant it.ā He waved his hand and Lucas lumbered away, arm still bleeding profusely.
They watched the boy stumble his way back to his home, listened to the shrieks that accompanied his arrival. Jude hated it. Hated that she was the reason for his pain.Ā
āYou have me back, but I swear to you I will hate you until I die for what you have done. You will never have me as you once did. Iāll be your Wife and Queen in name only.ā
āI brought your sword, Nightfell, back from Vivi.ā He held out the gleaming blade, as some sort of peace offering. Blood still dripped from the metal. She took it, only because the sword gave her comfort.
āThank you,ā she replied curtly. āTake me back, Cardan.ā
āIf that is what you wish.ā
Jude reached up and fingered the necklace that lay on her collarbone, comforted by the pearl that slid smoothly through her fingers.Ā
When they reached the bright green fields of Faerie, Jude was welcomed back with open arms. She smiled politely, accepted the congratulations, but felt an emptiness, as though she was missing a limb.
Faerie would never be her home again, nor would the Mortal Lands. She had been cursed to be a wanderer, never to have a place to feel safe. Once she had thought it was Cardan, but she was wrong. She was alone, just as she always was.
Cardan
As Cardan took hold of Judeās arm to transport her back to Faerie, he wondered if he had done the right thing by glamouring her date and cutting him on the arm with Judeās blade. He had thought sheād be proud of what he did, as she often resorted to more violent methods at Court. Perhaps he made an error, acted too rashly. Cardan did not know how he could make it up to her.Ā
Although he had achieved his goal of bringing Jude home, the cost had been too high. Whatever love had been between them, was now squandered into the dirt, crushed beneath his crown. If he had simply been Cardan, and not Cardan, High King of Elfhame, would she still hate him as fiercely as she did? Was it the crown that made him act so impulsively? Or was it because he couldnāt bear to see Jude with someone else?
The awful feeling of jealousy was like a cancer, infecting his mind until he knew nothing else. All he saw was a boy courting his love, his Jude, and he had never wanted to kill a mortal so much before. He once swore to himself he would never spill blood by his own hand, but for Jude, he would do anything.
Yet now, as they were back at Court, Cardan noticed the distance now on Judeās face as Oriana welcomed Jude back. Noticed how she kept touching the necklace at her throat.
When Jude looked at him, it was with a cold emptiness, a reserved impasse. He loved her still, but it seemed as though they were enemies once again.
Jude Durate, his wife, his Queen, hated him. He did not know if they could come back from it.
